The Walking Dead is a multimedia horror/drama franchise created by Robert Kirkman. It tells the stories of groups of survivors in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse.

The Walking Dead franchise began with the black-and-white comic book series, which ran from 2003 to 2019 for a total of 193 issues. The comic book series built a substantial fanbase and won several awards, and in 2010 AMC began airing a television series based on the comic book. The franchise has since spawned diverse other media, including:

Spin-off television series:
- Fear the Walking Dead, which began airing in 2015.
- The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which aired for two television seasons in 2020 and 2021.
- Tales of the Walking Dead, which began airing in 2022.
Several web series that expand on the stories of characters and situations seen in passing on the TV shows.
An aftershow, Talking Dead, which began in 2011 and airs in conjunction with new episodes of the TV shows.
Numerous books, both original novels and compilations of the comic book.
Video games, board games, and tabletop (miniatures-based) games.

The Walking Dead distinguishes itself from other entries in the zombie genre in that it can be considered character-based drama as well as horror. Robert Kirkman has said on several occasions that in the Walking Dead universe, fellow human survivors should be considered just as great a threat as the undead.

The Walking Dead has been referred to several times in various Simpsons media.

30	647	"Krusty the Clown"	The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead are two of the shows shown on the TV screens. Also, one of Homer's TV show "recap" reviews is "Too much walking, not enough dead. C-plus.", which, at the time the episode aired, could have referred to either The Walking Dead or Fear the Walking Dead.
33	709	"Treehouse of Horror XXXII"	Chris Edgerly's "scary name" screen credit, "Chris the Walking Deadgerly", is a reference to The Walking Dead.

Simpsons Comics #214	Worst Con Ever!	When the Simpsons attend the Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con, Homer (literally) runs into an exhibit for a TV show called The Strolling Dead, an obvious reference to The Walking Dead. There are also a number of Strolling Dead cosplayers in attendance; their costumes resemble characters from The Walking Dead TV show.
Simpsons Summer Shindig #9	Stretch Bob and Sideshow Clobber!	While Sideshow Bob is in the hospital, Chief Wiggum offers him a copy of the latest issue of The Walking Ned. In addition to being a pun on the franchise, the magazine's title is in the same typeface as the one used for the title on the covers of the comics.
Simpsons Winter Wingding #10	Fright Before Christmas	Homer, Bart, Lisa and other Springfieldians appear in a zombie-themed Christmas special called Wassailing Dead. The TV program's title is a reference to The Walking Dead and to the program's holiday setting (a zombie attack on Christmas Village).
