Stargate is an American science fiction franchise. It is based on the idea of an alien transportation device (the titular Stargate) making it possible to nearly instantaneously travel interstellar, and even intergalactic, distances. The franchise began with the Stargate movie in 1994, then continued with the television series Stargate SG-1, which was written as a sequel to the movie and aired from 1997 to 2007. Two other TV programs, Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009) and Stargate Universe (2009-2011), were set in the same continuity. The franchise has also given rise to novels, comic books, video games, an animated TV series, and two direct-to-DVD movies which concluded the storyline of Stargate SG-1. Not all of the additional media, however, are canonical with the continuity established in the film and the live-action TV programs and DVD movies.
The Stargate franchise and The Simpsons have several cast and crew members in common and have referred to each other on multiple occasions in their respective media.
