Medication
Once, the administration of the Retirement Castle stopped distributing pills to its residents, shortly after Mr. Burns canceled the health care program at his power plant. This caused Homer and Abe to go to Canada and get the badly needed medicine.[1]
Loneliness
To Abraham Simpson, the Retirement Castle is a lonely place to be. He often gets mad when his family doesn't come and visit him. The door features a sign reading 'Thank you for not discussing the outside world'. The main fun to be had in the home is to "stake yourself out a good spot at the staring window", which overlooks nothing but a barren tree, and bingo (prize: a whole banana).
Nature
The home is very strict in what the seniors can and cannot do. Have fun for example. Abraham Simpson comment, "That's the activity room. We're not allowed in there. That's the library. Not allowed in there either. And don't even think about going into the game room." Although sometimes the staff allows in youth groups to entertain the elderly and go through a varying degree of holiday spirit from hosting a Thanksgiving dinner to stapling one holiday icon after the other next to the calendar.
Staff
The staff of the care home couldn't care less for the people they are supposed to be looking after and make as little effort as possible to ensure the health and happiness of them, doing things like vacuuming their hair during "nap time", or switching their IV sacks with their catheter sacks when the former is empty and the latter is full. At one point, the Simpsons come to visit Grandpa with Santa's Little Helper, who leapt out of the car and ran in as they pulled up. Lisa commented, "He must smell leftovers," and a nearby tenant said. When the seniors get a Funtendo Zii installed, the nurses are forced to actually work and destroy it.[2] "Please, we prefer senior citizen." However, the staff does on occasion show some respect for the residents. When Montgomery Burns' hitman tried to shoot Abe Simpson with an uzi, the head nurse pulled out a shotgun and shot toward the would-be killer, saying "Our residents are trying to nap" in between her shots.
Redecoration and destruction
When, Abe Simpson's girlfriend Beatrice Simmons died, he inherited $106,000 which he used to refurbish and redecorate the home.[3] Also, when Mr. Burns' was doing his slant drilling operation, the ground below the Springfield Retirement Castle caved as a result of the imbalance caused by the drilling, causing the Retirement castle to be heavily damaged, and forcing the senior citizens to go to their families or away from the home at the very least, until the necessary repairs were completed. Because of this, Abraham Simpson swore to get revenge on Mr. Burns.[4]
Non-canon
The Retirement Castle is seen and is situated on Evergreen Terrace.[5]
