The Fly is a 1958 science fiction horror movie by Kurt Neumann based on a short story by George Langelaan. The plot follows a scientist who accidentally mutates himself into a fly. One version of himself has a fly's head and paw but an otherwise human body, the other has the body of a fly with his head. The picture also had Vincent Price in a supporting role. In 1986 the film was remade by David Cronenberg starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Both films have been frequently referenced on The Simpsons.

The "Fly vs. Fly" segment is an entire parody of the film. Bart turns in a partial fly mutant thanks to a failed experiment. The scene where he is stuck in a spider's web parodies the 1958 original, while the more icky scenes reference the 1986 remake.
