Cultural references
- The name of this level is a reference to the adventure novel Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne.
- When lining up for the race, Comic Book Guy says that "With great hunger comes great responsibility." This is a reference to when Spider-Man's Uncle Ben says "With great power comes great responsibility."
- Comic Book Guy while being attacked says "For the love of Kirk!", a reference to Capt. James T. Kirk from Star Trek.
- Comic Book Guy says to Bart "This Bartman is much more impressive than the dance of the same name.", a reference to Do the Bartman.
- Comic Book Guy says "Go go gadget stomach!", a reference to Inspector Gadget.
- In France, the song "Frère Jacques" plays.
- At the end of the level, Groundskeeper Willie makes a reference to Planet of the Apes. Comic Book Guy even says it is a reference.

- According to Willie, he was competing to honor his dead mother, who passed away in a Haggis eating contest.

- Homer says he was the first to throw up in last year's eating contest. In The Simpsons: Hit and Run, a newspaper in the first level says he was disqualified for vomiting.
- The championship belt is named for Red Barclay, the trucker from the episode "Maximum Homerdrive".
