Das Boot (English title: The Boat) is a 1981 German war movie written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen. It was based on the real-life U-boat U-96 and tells the story of the submarine and its crew during World War II. The movie was only a moderate box office success when it was first released; however, it was critically acclaimed and was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two. Das Boot has since been regarded as one of the greatest German movies of all time and one of the greatest submarine movies of all time.
Das Boot has been referred to in several television episodes of The Simpsons.
