Das Boot (English title: The Boat) is a 1981 German war movie written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen. It was based on the real-life U-boat U-96 and tells the story of the submarine and its crew during World War II. The movie was only a moderate box office success when it was first released; however, it was critically acclaimed and was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two.
