Apocalypse Now is a 1979 film by Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novel "Heart Of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad. It has been referenced in The Simpsons numerous times.

Distracted by this mail he didn't notice a sniper and was shot dead. This is very similar to a scene in Apocalypse Now when a soldier on a river boat receives an audio recording from his mother by mail. As he listens to it he is ambushed by a sniper and murdered.
