Cultural references

The Game Engine

  • If you walk into one of the elevators Sherri and Terri say Come and play which is a reference to The Shining.
  • "Escape From Krusty Island" is a pun on Escape From Monkey Island.
  • There are posters scattered around The Game Engine. These reference popular games and game series. These are:
    • "Snore" is a parody of Spore.
    • "Sitar Hero" is a parody of Guitar Hero.
    • "Need for Speedo" is a parody of Need for Speed.
    • "Mega Moleman X" is a parody of Mega Man X.
    • "Moral Kombat" is a parody of Mortal Kombat.

The Land of Chocolate

  • When talking to the White Chocolate Rabbit, Homer starts talking about Alice in Wonderland.

Bartman Begins

  • The title of this episode is a reference to the movie Batman Begins

Lisa the Tree Hugger

  • Bart's collectible trophy in this level is a poster showing Krusty the Clown saying "Only you can prevent Forest Fires", a reference to Smokey the Bear.

Around the World in 80 Bites

  • The name Around the World in 80 Bites is a reference to the book and film Around the World in 80 Days.
  • When lining up for the race, Comic Book Guy says that "With great hunger comes great responsibility." This is a reference to when Spider Man's uncle says "With great power comes great responsibilty."
  • This level makes references to many different countries, namely China, Australia, Mexico, Germany, France, Scotland, Italy and America, in that order.
  • At the end of the level Groundskeeper Willie makes a reference to Planet of the Apes.

Mob Rules

  • The game store sign 'Sequel Stop' is a reference to the store chain Game Stop.
  • Marge makes reference to DC superheroes Aquaman and Hawkman.
  • At the end of the level Kang and Kodos say space instead of some words which is a reference to how the Smurfs say smurf instead of some words.
  • Grand Theft Scracthy is a reference to the driving game Grand Theft Auto.

Enter the Cheatrix

  • The name of this episode is a reference to Enter the Matrix.
  • The boss at the end of the level is Donkey Kong (or maybe his grandfather, Cranky Kong, based on first appearance and game.)
  • There are many posters of EA in this level.
  • All of the portal pipes are a reference to the Warp Pipes in the Mario games. In fact, the sound that Bart and Lisa make when going down one of these pipes is the same as the sound that is heard when Mario goes down a Warp Pipe.
  • The enemy football players can be heard chanting "4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, HIKE!", a reference to the TV show LOST.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario can be seen on treadmills powering the machines.
  • Bart will sometimes say, "I hope we get to meet Zelda!" referring to Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda.
  • Crash Bandicoot can be heard saying, "I can't spin anymore! My back hurts!".
  • At the end of the level, Prof. Frink marries a Koopa Troopa.
  • Banjo and Kazooie are at a secret part of this level.
  • Kazooie says that she and Banjo were so close to find the true meaning of Stop N Swop.
  • Bill Farmer does the voice of Banjo, and Gilbert Gottfried does the voice of Kazooie.

Bargain Bin

  • Will Wright's green diamond is a reference to the plumbobs in The Sims and Sims 2.
  • Will Wright makes many references of EA.
  • The chasm death cliche makes a reference to Wile E. Coyote.
  • There is a poster for Sim Kitty which is a reference of Sim City.

NeverQuest

  • The name NeverQuest is a reference to the online game EverQuest, and possibly the game Neverwinter Nights.
  • When Homer gets the keycard he says "My precious" which references Smeagol/Gollum from Lord of the Rings.
  • Homer's outfit is a reference to the video game character Link from The Legend of Zelda.
  • Marge's outfit is a reference to the video game character Zelda from The Legend of Zelda.
  • The chests which contain different items are references to MMORPGs.
  • The mobbits are parodies of the hobbits from The Lord of the Rings.

Grand Theft Scracthy

  • The name Grand Theft Scratchy is a reference to the driving game Grand Theft Auto.
  • Marge sometimes says "Extreme Makeover, Marge edition!" which is a reference to the show Extreme Makeover - Home Edition.
  • This is one of the points in the game that exhibit profanity.

Medal of Homer

  • The name Medal of Homer is a reference to the video game Medal of Honor.

Big Super Happy Fun Fun Game

  • A cliche references Dungeons and Dragons.
  • The level makes some references to Pokemon.
  • The Flying Boat has a figurehead resembling Hello Kitty.
  • A statue of Santa's Little Helper dressed like Amaterasu from Okami, has a Keyblade in his mouth. This is a reference to Kingdom Hearts. Also, one the quotes said by the Comic Book Guy sumos is a recycled line from the main villain of the first game.
  • Comic Book Guy sumos stay a quote from Final Fantasy IX. They even indicate it as such.

Five Characters In Search Of An Author

  • In order to open Matt Groening's mansion door, the characters have to do some sort of memory game using floor pads that play a different note. The song successfully pieced together is none other than The Simpsons Theme.
  • Homer can say that he as an urge to sit on a couch, or has an urge to send money to Danny Elfman, who composed the theme.
  • During the boss battle of the level, Homer and Bart will have to face Bender and Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama.
  • The title Five Characters In Search Of An Author is a reference to the Twilight Zone episode called Five Characters In Search Of An Exit.

Game Over

  • At the Beginning of the episode Lisa builds a "Stairway to heaven" referencing the Led Zepplin song.
  • Skybucks is a reference to Starbucks.
  • When facing God one of the game consoles is a PrayStation which is a reference to the PlayStation.
  • When facing God one of the game consoles is an Xodus Box which is a reference to the Xbox.
  • When facing God one of the game consoles is a Hii (In the PS2 version called I am) which is a reference to the Wii.
  • One of the houses is named House of Hendrix.
  • Another house says 'Reserved For Elvis' on it.
  • Yet another house says Maude Flanders.
  • The fact that Lisa uses her Hand of Buddha to build a tower to Heaven may be referencing the Bibical story of the Tower of Babel.
  • At the beginning of the episode, the Moe-orc says "Oh, for the love of Sauron." when a sign falls on him, which relates to Lord of The Rings.
