Produced by HiT Entertainment, the series, which premiered on PBS Kids on April 6, 1992, is about the title character Barney, a purple anthropomorphic tyrannosaurus rex who conveys educational messages through songs and small dance routines with a friendly, optimistic attitude.

New episodes no longer air since 2009, but reruns occasionally air on various PBS stations.
