"Mothers and Other Strangers" is the ninth episode of broadcast season 33 of The Simpsons and the seven hundred fifteenth episode overall. It originally aired on November 28, 2021. The episode was written by Al Jean and directed by Rob Oliver. It guest stars Rachel Bloom as Annette and Glenn Close as Mona Simpson.
Synopsis[edit]
- A therapy session for Homer on Mother's Day sends him down memory lane, recalling the last time he sees his mother during his teenage years. A younger Homer and Grampa go on a trip to find Mona. However, the FBI are also on their tail.
Plot[edit]
Bart is browsing scenes on TV when he stumbles upon Muttflix, catching Santa's Little Helper's attention, and he invites She Biscuit over since it's Mother's Day.
Bart and Lisa gift Marge mugs they made at school, giving her the same gift they gave her previously, while Maggie gives her a baby's kiss and teases them for their lame gifts.
Meanwhile, they notice that Homer is sad upon hearing it's Mother's Day. After giving Marge a framed picture of the kids, he continues crying, remembering his mother, Mona.
Lisa suggests he use the app Nutz for therapy to cope with his loss, and they take him back 30 years to the day Abe received notes from Mona saying she's wanted by the FBI and is leaving them. To avoid having to explain it, Grampa told 9-year-old Homer that she was dead.
After learning how to drive at 16, and crashing while driving with Hans Moleman—and meeting a newly hired Wiggum—Homer receives a postcard from Utah from Mona, while the FBI monitors him and Wiggum checks donuts at Lard Lad Donuts.
In the present, Homer gets a better consultant on his case and returns to the memory of when he confronted his father about the truth of her death. Grampa confesses the truth, realizing he never gave her what she needed—to leave him.
But Homer isn't satisfied and one day leaves home to go to Utah to find out once and for all, with Abe in the backseat and the FBI following them. After bonding during the drive, they stop at the Latter Days Inn, where a waitress identifies Mona in the picture Abe shows her, and they resume driving.
They arrive at Texxon, where they spot Mona, but as she approaches them, she sees the FBI agents and escapes. They try to chase her, but Abe gets stuck, and Homer chooses to help him since he never left him. Mona escapes in a hippie's van and heads to San Francisco.
Back in the present, Grampa tells them they never found her again. Satisfied with the therapy, Homer uninstalls the app, getting the therapist fired for resolving the case too quickly, and tells another untold story.
When Bart is born, Homer struggles to cut the umbilical cord and ends up tearing it off. That night, while Marge sleeps, a doctor enters the room to check on the baby and is revealed to be Mona, visiting her newborn grandson. As she leaves, she kisses Abe goodbye too.
In closure, with Santa's Little Helper bringing a dead bird to his mother and the past now resolved, Homer brings the family to dinner at The Gilded Truffle, where he eats like it's a buffet—so much so that the restaurant changes its sign to avoid bankruptcy.
