"The Star of the Backstage" is the first episode of broadcast season 33 of The Simpsons and the seven hundred seventh episode overall. It originally aired on September 26, 2021. The episode was written by Elisabeth Kiernan Averick and directed by Rob Oliver. It guest stars Kristen Bell as Marge's singing voice and Sara Chase as Sasha Reed.
Synopsis[edit]
- When Marge remembers the time she worked on a musical as the stage manager, she brings back the cast, including Broadway actress Sasha Reed, to perform a reunion show. But when Marge finds out that the cast left her out of their activities, she turns on the cast and reveals Sasha as a fraud.
Plot[edit]
At a memorial for Franklin Chase, Marge sees a VHS showing a musical, Y2K: The Millennium Bug, in which she participated along with other Springfielders. Mrs. Chase gives Marge her High School prompt book, prompting more memories and the production of a musical, with Marge as stage manager.
Lenny breaks his hip and is replaced by Homer, encouraged by Lisa and Bart. The people from back in 1992 return to reprise the show, and they try calling Sasha Reed to join, but to no avail. Sasha, however, appears on stage, singing about her past since they last saw her.
Soon after, she organizes a meeting with the cast at the lake house, but since Marge is not part of the cast and just the manager, she is not invited. The next day, Marge brings back pieces from the memories of their past, and they start another song about those days. However, Marge realizes she was never truly part of their shared experiences.
Marge leaves the theater alone and feeling rejected. She confesses her troubles to her mother at her apartment, and with the help of her computer, she starts researching Sasha. The next day, she updates the cast with her new discoveries.
However, instead of turning them against Sasha, the cast turns on Marge, making her feel even more rejected. At home, she becomes angry and can't sleep, and Homer sings her a song to help her understand her mistake.
She goes to Moe's to apologize and calls the cast to regroup and make the musical happen, which becomes a big success. Marge still feels down for being left out once again, but two people invite her to dine at Ruthie's Diner to express their admiration for her work as stage manager, while Homer invites the cast to party at their house.
Production[edit]
The episode was originally named "No Day but Yesterday".[1][2]
During the San Diego Comic-Con At Home 2021 panel, a preview of one of the songs was shown. The image has Homer in his underpants singing whilst Marge looks annoyed. Later it was revealed that 7 songs will be present in the episode and that one of the song is named A Delicate Approach.[3][4]
CXG composer Jack Dolgen wrote the music for this episode.[5]
Reception[edit]
"The Star of the Backstage" was nominated for a 2022 Writers Guild of America award in Animation, but it lost to "Planteau" from Tuca & Bertie.[6]
