Opening Sequence[edit]
- The sequence is a parody of Sausage Party.
- The title, The Sweets Hereafter, is a reference to the movie of the same name.
- The characters in the sequence are parodies of various candies:
- Barterfinger: Butterfinger.
- Oh Homer!: Nestlé's Oh Henry!.
- Maggie: Ring Pop.
- Marge Bar: Mars.
- Mint Peppermint Patty and Selma: York Peppermint Pattie.
- Senior Mints: Junior Mints.
- Kirkish Taffy: Turkish Taffy.

- The music at the beginning is Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.
- Homer's song parodies "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr.
- A Pazuzu statue is delivered through Amazon.
- The part where demonically possessed Maggie breathes out fire is a reference to the 2003 film Exorcism.
- Reverend Lovejoy says he got his degree at Pepperdine University.
- Pazuzu says "the chicken goes [demonic screech and fireball]", a reference to the See 'n Say toy, and "if you can't trust a Catholic priest with a child, who can you trust", referencing the Catholic Church's cover-up for the priests' child abuse.
- Fisher-Price-like toys escape into a barn.
- An Etch A Sketch toy escapes Maggie's room.
- An aged version of Sheriff Woody from Toy Story shoots himself in the mouth.
- Bart references David Schwimmer and the fact that Friends' co-workers had a difficult time working with him

- The title and plot of the segment are a parody of Coraline.
- According to Homer, there's no smoke alarm in the house, cause smoke is its own alarm, a reference to the saying "Where there's smoke, there's fire".

- This segment is a parody of Survivor Type, a short story by Stephen King.
- Lisa references Game of Thrones in the warning to the viewers.
- Ned calls Homer "Homer Aloner", a reference to Home Alone.
- Homer references Breakfast at Tiffany's.
- Homer's Left Alone Again is a parody of On the Road Again by Willie Nelson.
- Homer sings a demonic version of Hallelujah.

General[edit]
- This episode was banned in Australia due to the graphic scenes of cannibalism in "MMM... Homer".
- This episode never aired in Italy until February 20, 2021, due to its strong content. However, the episode is available on Disney+ with Italian audio.
Opening Sequence[edit]
- The logo of the series is preceded by The Simpsons Easter Special. The Simpsons haven't had a Easter special yet, but Easter showed up in past episodes.
The Exor-Sis[edit]
- Marge says that "No one leaves alive" are Maggie's first words, continuing a reoccurring gag where, every time Maggie speaks, a character, usually Homer, will declare the words she says to be her 'first words'.
Coralisa[edit]
- Marge refers to Maggie still recovering from Pazuzu, a reference to the previous segment, "The Exor-Sis".
- Lisa breaks the fourth wall referencing her segment as the middle segment of a Halloween show.
MMM... Homer[edit]
- The disclaimer at the beginning of this segment where a Simpson family appears on a stage in reference to warning the audience of the disturbing content within this segment is the first time in 23 years to use one since the airing of "Treehouse of Horror V" in 1994, as this warning was used at the beginning of the first five Halloween episodes to warn the audience.
Goofs[edit]
- Homer's index fingers are suddenly back on his hands, after being eaten by him in previous scenes, when he is pulling out his tooth to top a cupcake with.
