Cultural references[edit]

  • The name NeverQuest is a reference to the online MMORPG game EverQuest, and possibly the game Neverwinter Nights.
  • The level has references to The Legend of Zelda:
    • Homer's outfit is a reference to the character Link.
    • Marge's outfit is a reference to Princess Zelda.
    • The name of the kingdom is revealed in the Nintendo DS version of the level to be Pierule, a parody of Hyrule.
    • A poster for Link's Golf Course is seen.
  • Homer refers to Marge as being "a sexy MILF", which Marge corrects by saying that the word is "elf".
  • There are numerous references to The Lord of the Rings:
    • The Mobbits are parodies of the Hobbits.
    • The starting area is a parody of The Shire.
    • Homer says "this is just like that movie... Lord of the Flies," mistaking Lord of the Flies for The Lord of the Rings.
    • Homer sometimes says "You shall not pass... wind."
    • Marge sometimes says "I'm like Gandalf, but sexy."
    • The poster for Morc's Tavern features a picture of a Balrog and the line "Live nude Balrogs!!"
    • Rod says that he's not allowed to see Lord of the Rings movies.
    • When Homer gets the keycard, he says "My precious", which is a reference to Gollum.
  • One of the Mobbits sometimes says that he prefers Narnia, the fictional land from the C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia book series.
  • Upon entering the maze area, Marge notices the camera switching to an overhead point of view. Homer states that this is just like his favorite old sword-and-sorcery game, Dig Dug—which is neither a sword-and-sorcery game nor set in an overhead point of view, at least not until the sequel, Dig Dug II.
  • When freed, one of the Mobbits can say "I know why the caged bird sings," a reference to the Maya Angelou autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
  • Homer says "How come there's no levels in this game based on the Police Academy movies?"
  • Otto can say "Whoa, this is nothing like Casper cartoons," referencing Casper the Friendly Ghost.
  • Otto can say "Prepare to be Dead Zeppelin," referencing the heavy metal band Led Zeppelin.
  • When entering the dragon's lair, Homer says "Just like Dragon's Lair."

Trivia[edit]

  • The original ending for NeverQuest was a giant troll played by Nelson Muntz. However, for complicated reasons, the developers decided to proceed directly to the final boss fight with Selmatty and skip the entire waking-up-the-troll puzzle.
  • In the maze, the camera is positioned overhead, making this portion of the game resemble the arcade game Gauntlet. In fact, some of the narrator's quotes are taken from Gauntlet, and the enemies are Simpson versions of Gauntlet grunts and ghosts.
  • This level and its tasks are completely different in each version.
  • Sometimes, in the final part of the level where Homer, Marge, and the Mobbits confront the Dragon, Marge asks "Which one of you is gay again?"
