The Springfield Toxic Waste Dump
Radioactive waste.png

Radioactive waste is commonly seen around Springfield as an ominous green sludge-like liquid, often sealed in leaking drums marked with the radioactive symbol. These barrels are commonly seen due to the lax disposal methods of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant and Mr. Burns.

On many occasions the liquid itself can be heard humming and throbbing as if it were alive. It is seen in many unsafe dumping environments such as under the sea, stuffed into trees, hidden in playgrounds and the homes of the plant employees.[1]

The Springfield Toxic Waste Dump is the only structured area within the town where radioactive waste can be dumped.

Video games

In one of the missions in The Simpsons Road Rage, Snake has to knock down 20 barrels of nuclear waste for his "community service".

In The Simpsons Skateboarding, radioactive waste can be found in the Construction Site and Power Plant levels, and in the level select screen.

In The Simpsons: Hit & Run, Professor Frink learned that the invading Kang and Kodos' only weakness was nuclear waste. Mr. Burns gave Homer access to his supply of waste which was boarded onto the aliens' spaceship. The waste caused the ship to explode and killed the aliens, with the additional side effect of giving Homer a third arm. In addition, nuclear waste can be seen dripping from pipes at the Nuclear Power Plant, and in Level 4, a number of pick-up trucks that drive around the town carry barrels of waste.

Comics

Bart and Milhouse went to the power plant and exposed an ant to nuclear waste and made it bite them, hoping it would give them superpowers. Instead they were hospitalized with radiation poisoning. The ant later bit Homer, giving him a superpower in knowledge of donuts, which he utilized in a new job at the Lard Lad Donuts factory.[3]

Victims of the waste

Blinky, a three eyed fish found near the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant.
