VABF is the twenty-eighth production season of The Simpsons. Al Jean served as the showrunner for most of the season while Matt Selman served as the showrunner for VABF03, VABF09, VABF17, and VABF22. The episodes mostly aired in broadcast season 27 on Fox, with seven rollover episodes from the production season airing in broadcast season 28. The episodes aired from December 6, 2015 with "'Paths of Glory", to November 13, 2016 with "Havana Wild Weekend".

Along the way, his tense relationship with Homer, an overly uncaring version of himself, and Lisa, who overshadows him in every way possible, shapes Bart more than he realizes. VABF03 "The Girl Code" January 3, 2016 Chris Clements Rob LaZebnik S27 E10 After a photo Marge posts on social media gets Homer fired, he returns to the best job he ever had, a dishwasher at a Greek restaurant. This same post inspires Lisa to code an app that predicts the real-life consequences of anything you post online. However, she accidentally creates sentient artificial intelligence. Cohen S27 E11 After Bart starts drinking a milk substitute filled with bad hormones, he experiences early puberty and grows a little mustache — as well as feelings for Mrs. Berrera, his new teacher. Mrs. Berrera winds up in the middle of a romantic rivalry, as she also draws the attention of Principal Skinner. Guest starring: Sofia Vergara as Carol Berrera. VABF05 "Much Apu About Something" January 17, 2016 Bob Anderson Michael Price S27 E12 Sanjay passes his stake in the Kwik-E-Mart to his millennial son, Jay, who turns it into a hip, health food market against Apu's insistence on tradition. Bart, whom Homer had convinced to give up pranking, is called upon to return to his trickster life and take down the new store. Guest starring: Utkarsh Ambudkar as Jay Nahasapeemapetilon. VABF06 "Gal of Constant Sorrow" February 21, 2016 Matthew Nastuk Carolyn Omine S27 E14 After Bart accidentally sends a sweet homeless woman's cart into the river, he allows her to live in his closet for a small fee. When Lisa discovers that the woman is an incredible folk singer, she offers her own closet and plans a concert, only to be disappointed by Hettie's surprising substance abuse and violent nature. Meanwhile, Homer tries to prove he's handy, but accidentally traps the cat in the walls of the house. Guest starring: Bob Boilen as himself, Kelsey Grammer as Sideshow Bob, Kate McKinnon as Hettie Mae Boggs, and Natalie Maines as Hettie's singing voice. Then, overwhelmed by the attention, he invents an algorithm to perfectly pair the lonely men and women of Springfield. Meanwhile, Marge, Bart, and Lisa visit Grampa for Valentine's Day and try to rescue the old folks from a drug-induced hallucination that allows them to relive their happiest memories. VABF08 "Lisa the Veterinarian" March 6, 2016 Steven Dean Moore Dan Vebber S27 E15 After performing CPR on a tased raccoon, Lisa discovers her calling to be a veterinarian and becomes an intern at the local office, but learns a tough lesson when her neglected class hamster dies. Meanwhile, Marge moonlights as a crime scene cleaner for a little extra money, and the trauma of the gory scenes makes her increasingly dead inside. Guest starring: Michael York as Lionel Budgie. VABF09 "The Marge-ian Chronicles" March 13, 2016 Chris Clements Brian Kelley S27 E16 When Lisa finds out about a project to put life on Mars, she excitedly signs up, to Marge's dismay. The rest of the family signs up with her to get Lisa to quit. But when the launch to Mars is scheduled for that Thursday, both Lisa and Marge are too stubborn to give up. VABF10 "The Burns Cage" April 3, 2016 Rob Oliver Rob LaZebnik S27 E17 When Smithers is devastated by Burns' lack of affection towards him, Homer makes it his mission to find him a boyfriend. Meanwhile, after Bart orchestrates the removal of the lead in the school's stage production of Casablanca, Milhouse serves as a terrible understudy, which frustrates his co-star, Lisa. VABF11 "How Lisa Got Her Marge Back" April 10, 2016 Bob Anderson Jeff Martin S27 E18 After getting into an argument, Marge takes Lisa on a touristy trip to Capital City. After attending a musical, they meet the show's star, Andrew Rannells, who reminds Lisa how lucky she is to have such a great mom. Meanwhile, Bart is frustrated that everyone expects his pranks, so he teams up with Maggie to trick people. Guest starring: Andrew Rannells as himself. VABF12 "Fland Canyon" April 24, 2016 Matthew Nastuk J. Stewart Burns S27 E19 Homer recalls a tense family vacation to the Grand Canyon with the Flanders family. At first, the Flanders' perfection puts the families at odds, but when they get stranded and Ned and Homer go for help, the families finally bond. VABF13 "Simprovised" May 15, 2016 Matthew Nastuk John Frink S27 E21 After butchering a speech in front of all of his friends at work, Homer turns to improv comedy to gain back his confidence in his public speaking skills. Meanwhile, Marge decides to rebuild Bart's lackluster treehouse, but tensions rise when Bart questions her building skills. VABF14 "To Courier with Love" May 8, 2016 Timothy Bailey Bill Odenkirk S27 E20 After promising Marge the trip of a lifetime, frugality gets the better of Homer when he makes a deal with a travel agent to be a courier of a secret package in exchange for a discounted family vacation to Paris. Upon arrival, he finds the package is an endangered snake, and he and Lisa decide to save it. Guest starring: Jay Leno as himself. VABF15 "Orange Is the New Yellow" May 22, 2016 Matthew Faughnan Eric Horsted S27 E22 When Marge gets arrested for letting Bart go to the park unsupervised, she serves time only to realize that prison is a welcome break from the demands of her life as a mom and wife. In her absence, Homer struggles to manage all of the parenting responsibilities that Marge usually handles. Guest starring: Kevin Michael Richardson as the Springfield Women's Prison guard. VABF16 "Treehouse of Horror XXVII" October 16, 2016 Steven Dean Moore Joel H. Cohen S28 E4 In "Dry Hard", in the midst of a major drought, Mr. Burns introduces a Hunger Games-style contest in which Springfield's children fight each other for a day in Burns' personal reservoir. In "BFF R.I.P.", Lisa's imaginary best friend, Rachel, is jealous of Lisa's real best friends and starts killing them. Finally, in "Moefinger", Moe tells Bart that the barflies are actually covert agents and that he wants Bart to join their team in Homer's place. VABF17 "The Town" October 9, 2016 Rob Oliver Dave King S28 E3 After Homer catches Bart rooting for Springfield's football rival, the Boston Americans, he plans a family "hate-cation" trip to Boston in an attempt to show Bart that Boston is a terrible city. However, the family ends up loving Boston and decides to move there. Guest starring: Bill Burr as Boston fan 1, Michael Chiklis as the handsome quarterback, Rachel Dratch as Bostonian doctor, Doris Kearns Goodwin as herself, and Dana Gould as Boston fan 2. VABF18 "Friends and Family" October 2, 2016 Lance Kramer J. Stewart Burns S28 E2 Mr. Burns hires the Simpsons to play his live-in virtual reality family, but excludes Homer so that he may play the father. Now alone, Homer finds a new best friend in girl-next-door Julia, who eats, drinks, and thinks like him. Guest starring: Allison Janney as Julia. VABF19 "Havana Wild Weekend" November 13, 2016 Bob Anderson Dan Castellaneta, Deb Lacusta, and Peter Tilden S28 E7 When the Retirement Castle and the V.A. Hospital can't solve Grampa's health issues, the Simpsons decide to take a family trip to Cuba to get him cheap medical care. There, Grampa meets a new love interest and an old friend. Guest starring: Stacy Keach as Howard K. Duff VIII and Deb Lacusta as Isabella. VABF20 "Monty Burns' Fleeing Circus" September 25, 2016 Matthew Nastuk Tom Gammill and Max Pross S28 E1 When Springfield is burned to the ground, the Simpsons beg Mr. Burns to fund its rebuilding. Burns agrees, with one condition: he gets to put on a variety show at the Springfield Bowl. Guest starring: Amy Schumer as Mrs. Burns and Pendleton Ward as "Simpsons Time" singer. VABF21 "Trust but Clarify" October 23, 2016 Michael Polcino Harry Shearer S28 E5 Lisa and Bart investigate Krusty's suspicious new "Krustaceans" candy after seeing strange behavior in kids eating it. Meanwhile, Homer wants a promotion at the nuclear plant and asks Marge to help him dress the part, and news anchor Kent Brockman struggles to find his footing in the changing media world. Guest starring: Dan Rather as himself. VABF22 "There Will Be Buds" November 6, 2016 Matthew Faughnan Matt Selman S28 E6 Homer gets roped into coaching the kids' lacrosse team with Milhouse's dad, Kirk, who is in desperate need of a friend. When Kirk gets too clingy, Homer vents about how much of a loser he is. Kirk overhears his rant and disappears right when the team needs him most, before the championship game.
