Cultural references[edit]
- The episode's title is a wordplay on the 2016 American musical La La Land. Some elements from the film are parodied during the episode:
- Lisa falls in love with jazz pianist Brendan Beiderbecke. In the film, Mia Dolan (Emma Stone) falls in love with Sebastian Wilder (Ryan Gosling), a struggling jazz pianist.
- The opening sequence parodies that from La La Land with the song "Another Springfield Day" being a parody of "Another Day of Sun".
- Pope Francis appears in the Popemobile.
- Booths at the STEM Conference:
- Database is seen hosting a "The Science of Wonder Woman" booth. Pictures of Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth and the Invisible Plane are being exhibited.
- Mr. Burns gives Professor Frink a pamphlet stating that cigarettes stop NFL Concussions.
- "Meth-amatics" is a pun on meth and mathematics.
- The "Solar Fracking" stand is a pun on solar power and fracking, which are sources of energy with notable contrasting characteristics.
- There is a picture of the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci at "Dr. Nick's 3 Minute Sex Change" booth.
- Insta-Grandma and its logo is a reference to Instagram and its old logo.
- A robot says Stranger Things suffers from Season 2 fatigue.
- There is an IMAX version of former vice president Al Gore.
- Lisa compares the STEM Conference with the famous music festival of Woodstock.
- Brendan mentions having read a review by Gary Chalmers about Springfield Elementary School on Yelp, the online advertising company.
- Lisa paraphrases "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine", a famous line from Casablanca.
- Lisa mentions the K-6, the grades which are traditionally grouped together in American elementary schools.
- Homer says the hotel bar is beautiful, just like the one in The Shining.
- Homer compares himself to Picasso.
- Homer asks Bart if he's making drugs by asking him if he's "breaking bad", in a reference to the TV series Breaking Bad.
- Cletus' company name, "Meth Life", is a pun on the insurance company MetLife.
- Nelson sings a parody of "My Funny Valentine" to Lisa.
- Groundskeeper Willie explains to Lisa that once two queens were fighting over Scotland. He is referring to a dramatic period in Scottish history during the 16th century involving Elizabeth I of England, and Mary, Queen of Scots, with the latter being found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth in 1586 and beheaded the following year.
- Willie mentions the thistle, Scotland national flower.
- Bart and Milhouse wrote the chemical equation for the combustion of propane in the back of the Talent Show paper.
- Martin is reading Mama's Boy's Life, a parody of Boys' Life magazine. Its cover depicts Prince Charles sitting on the lap of his mother, Elizabeth II.
- Nelson says "don't be a dingus, I'm the next Charlie Mingus".
- Dewey Largo introduces Bart as "Dennis the Chemist", a pun on Dennis the Menace.
- Chief Wiggum calls Bart "Screwy Pasteur", a reference to chemist Louis Pasteur.
- Marge says the episode was going to be a parody of Moonlight instead of La La Land. This is a reference to the mixup at the 89th Academy Awards where La La Land was originally announced as the winner of the Best Picture award even though Moonlight had actually won.
- Homer mentions that he wants to watch X-Men: Apocalypse.
Continuity[edit]
- The robot from "Them, Robot" and "Pork and Burns" appears.

- Lisa's relationship with Nelson is seen again. ("Lisa's Date with Density")
- Bart once again floods a school with foam from a chemical reaction ("Bart the Genius"), only this time it's deliberate.
Trivia[edit]
- The Simpsons: Tapped Out's SkyFinger, later revealed in the "The End of the Beginning" video during the Winter 2015 event to be Maggie, appears crushing people and cars.
- Props from couch gags are present in the Simpson House garage.
