Synopsis

"After Bart finds out that his new teacher, Rayshelle Peyton, is the same woman who saved him from drowning, he struggles to handle his feelings toward her. Meanwhile, Lisa befriends an octopus, about whom she makes a documentary."

Plot

Lisa is recording a documentary, My Cephalopod Soulmate. After receiving a C in second grade, she joins the Future Nature Documentarians, goes underwater, and befriends Molly, an octopus. Her recording is interrupted by Marge when she spots a shark approaching Molly and snaps a photo of her and Molly together. At school, Skinner and Chalmers welcome a new teacher, Rayshelle Peyton, who has moved to town with her husband, Darryl. They hire her as the new teacher for Bart's class. However, when Bart meets her, he has a flashback and starts acting strangely, running away.

At the Aztec Theater, the Future Nature Documentarians Film Festival features Lisa’s documentary, which ends with a shark catching Molly in its mouth. The crowd cheers for her work. At home, however, Lisa brings her trophy to her room, hiding her sadness from Homer and Marge and revealing that she actually saved Molly from the shark.

At school, Ms. Peyton introduces project-based learning to the other teachers in the lounge, proposing a class project to create new Seven Wonders of the World, which they enthusiastically support. In class, she begins getting to know the students. When she gets to Bart, he glues paper to his face and stumbles around the room trying to explain it. During recess, Milhouse and Nelson point out that he's acting weird around the new, actually nice teacher.

At home, Molly travels through the plumbing and ends up in Homer's cereal. Meanwhile, Bart enjoys doing homework for once and imagines an angelic version of Ms. Peyton. The next morning, Milhouse presents a similar project, and Bart, feeling betrayed, destroys both his and Milhouse’s work. The class turns against him. At the same time, Molly begins causing chaos at home, avoiding all attempts by Lisa to contain her.

Ms. Peyton calls Homer and Marge in to discuss Bart's behavior. Later, Homer talks with Bart, assuming he has a crush on her. Bart reveals that he met her before, during Lisa’s documentary filming. He had found a bucket labeled Paradiso del Mare and gone to the hotel pool, belly-flopped into the water, and nearly drowned. Ms. Peyton saved him, but in an effort to protect his pride, he yelled at her. Now he’s afraid she’ll hate him if she recognizes him. Homer advises him to be honest.

Lisa realizes Molly is not safe at home, especially after an encounter with Santa's Little Helper, so she takes her to school. The next day, Bart sees Ms. Peyton kissing her husband in a closet, becomes upset, breaks the water fountain, and realizes he’s in love with her.

On the day of the Seven Wonders presentation, Bart tells Homer about his realization. Homer explains that while Ms. Peyton is amazing, she’s a grown-up, and sometimes amazing things just aren’t meant to be yours. Lisa similarly realizes she must let Molly go. Bart tries to control himself, but seeing Peyton’s husband again pushes him over the edge. He grabs Molly’s jar to scream into it, but Molly ends up on his face. He flees under the bleachers, throws balls at people, and wrecks the student projects.

Lisa stops him and removes Molly, but the damage is done. Skinner encourages Ms. Peyton to stay at the school and suggests transferring Bart, though no teacher agrees to take him. She reassures him and says she’s staying. Bart also inadvertently reveals what his previous teacher used to make him do—write on the blackboard.

In the end, Lisa releases Molly, saving her once again from the shark, which annoys Database.
