Synopsis[edit]

"After Homer discovers a genius talent for styling hair and opens his own salon, he becomes Springfield's most in-demand hair stylist. But having to listen to women's problems and gossip all day long leads Homer to believe his gift may actually be a curse. Meanwhile, when Milhouse decides to live each day to the fullest, he comes out of his shell and professes his love for Lisa, only to have his heart broken. Milhouse then catches the eye of popular fifth-grader Taffy, causing Lisa to make a bold move."

Plot[edit]

Promotional picture for the episode

Lisa paints a picture of Patty and Selma, with a lot of artistic liberties taken. As Patty and Selma nap, Bart jumps in front of them, causing Lisa to mess up her painting. As Lisa tries to attack Bart, paint ends up getting in Patty's hair. After using paint thinner to try and remove the paint, Bart and Lisa get Homer to help. Homer cuts Patty's hair and when the two sisters wake up, they are shocked at first but they both realize that they like it. Selma then asks Homer to cut her hair too.

At school the next day, Milhouse is depressed because he found out that Nemo's mother dies at the beginning of Finding Nemo. Milhouse then decides to live life to its fullest and decides to ask Lisa out again. At dinner that night, Lindsey Naegle shows up after she hears about Homer's hair styling skills and asks for her hair to be cut. She offers Homer $100 to style her hair and Homer does it. Homer then decides to open up his own salon, Are We Hair Yet?

At school the next day, Milhouse sings a "love" song to Lisa, "Teacher Said Don't Eat the Paste". Lisa rejects Milhouse after the song but a girl called Taffy thought it was a romantic song. The two of them then started to date. In Homer's new salon, he cuts and styles hair of many women of Springfield, who all gossip to Homer with boring stories. This gets to Homer and he quickly gets fed up of the gossip. The next day at school, Lisa finds out that Milhouse and Taffy are dating, which surprises her as she thinks Taffy is too good for Milhouse. Meanwhile, Homer gets fed up of all the gossip and stories and ends up running out of his salon, cutting everything as he goes by. He then goes to Moe's Tavern where he complains about his new job.

Homer tries to quit as a hairdresser, but Chief Wiggum and Sarah refuse to let him as Sarah needs her hair styled for the Policeman's Ball. Homer then continues as a hairdresser, to his annoyance. Meanwhile, Lisa is getting more and more suspicious of Taffy and decides to follow her and Milhouse on their date. She follows them to Holding Hands Point where she accidentally interrupts the date between Hans Moleman and Lunchlady Dora. Lisa then interrupts Milhouse and Taffy's date and Taffy breaks up with Milhouse as he's still in love with Lisa. Lisa then kisses Milhouse to apologize for breaking him and Taffy up, but tells Milhouse that she doesn't really know how she feels about him.

At the policeman's ball, Homer and Marge show up and Marge tells everyone that her hair was done by Julio rather than Homer. All the women then go to Julio to get their hair done, rather than Homer. Homer then styles Marge's hair in the back garden of their house as Marge tells Homer that he knows how to please a woman.

Production[edit]

A potential B-plot for the season 4 episode "New Kid on the Block" was to have Homer take night courses as a hairdresser and turn out to be a natural at it. This eventually got cut and replaced with the all-you-can-eat buffet plot. This plot may have inspired "Homer Scissorhands".[1] This was writer Steve Viksten's final writing credit before his death on June 23, 2014.[2]

Reception[edit]

In its original airing, "Homer Scissorhands" was viewed by an estimated 5.480 million households and had a 2.5/8% share among adults between the ages of 18 and 49.[3]

As of June 2020, the episode has a 7.0 rating on IMDb.[4]
