Cultural references[edit]
- The title of the episode is a reference to the 1995 American drama film Mr. Holland's Opus.
- In the episode's couch gag, the Simpsons parody the Statue of Abraham Lincoln located in the Lincoln Memorial. The phrase "In Couch Gags We Trust" is a pun on "In God We Trust", the official motto of the United States. The phrase in the penny, "Vescere Bracis Meis", is Latin for "Eat my shorts!", Bart's catchphrase.

- According to Homer, the President was American rapper Kid Rock.
- When Marge wakes Lisa up for her fourteenth birthday, Lisa is wearing a T-shirt with the mathematical constant π.
- Lisa's fantasy Harvard boyfriend is a parody of Oliver Barrett IV from the movie Love Story. Lisa using magic by nose-twitching and accompanying sound effect are referencing TV show Bewitched. The man planting a sign on the crumble building is Harvard founder John Harvard.
- The Devil mentions Universal Studios and references the Flaming Moe drink being expensive in the themed area.
- Oogle is a parody of Google.
- In the song "Those Were the Days":
- The sign "Harvard College Even Our Dropouts Are Billionaires" is a reference to Bill Gates, who dropped out of Harvard to found Microsoft.
- Pictures of Presidents Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt, both Harvard graduates (class of 1904 and class of 1880 respectively), are hanging on the wall in the Harvard Admissions Office.
- Homer sings "By the Beautiful Sea" by Harry Carroll and Harold R. Atteridge when he starts to act like Grampa.
- "Remembering You" by Roger Kellaway, the end theme for All in the Family, plays during the end credits.

Continuity[edit]
- Abraham Simpson appears in coma. However, in "Barthood", he's dead.
- When Lisa is seen as a baby, Marge's hairstyle is the one she had in "That '90s Show", though she always had her hair up in a beehive since she was pregnant with Bart.
- The school bus says "Springfield Elementary School" though she's in high school, and Bart's hair changes.
