Cultural references
- The title is a play on the film Das Boot. However, since Bus is of male grammatical gender, "Der Bus" would be correct German.
- Most of the episode about being on the island is a spoof of the classic novel Lord of the Flies, although in the end of the story the boys are rescued by a naval officer, who themselves are in the middle of a war. This ending is however true to the 1990 film version of Lord of the Flies, which made numerous changes to the original story.
- When the kids are squabbling in the classroom, Principal Skinner restores order by banging his shoe on the desk. Skinner's actions are similar to Soviet dictator Nikita Khrushchev at the UN allegedly banging his shoe on a table.
- When the rest of the children (led by Nelson) are chasing Bart, Lisa, and Milhouse and have smeared charcoal ash on their faces; Ralph Wiggum's face resembles Peter Criss of KISS.
- Milhouse swings across the chasm on a vine but refuses to throw it back to Lisa and Bart, similar to the behavior of Satipo towards Indiana Jones in the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
- Bart said that the kids would be like The Swiss Family Robinson with more cursing.
- Comic Book Guy attempts to download a pornographic picture of Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager.
- Bart asking Martin to set up a coconut radio is a reference to Gilligan's Island.
Trivia
- Springfield Elementary's Model U.N. Club members include:
- In early scripts, early storyboards, and the animatic phase, Bart represented Italy. In the final version, he represents Libya.
- In early scripts and early storyboards, Homer and Marge's subplot in the episode originally had them search Springfield for Bart and Lisa with Homer, Barney Gumble, Moe Szyslak, Lenny, and Carl ultimately using a boat to locate them in the climax. In the animatic phase, it was changed to Homer incuring the full wrath of computer supremo Bill Gates with his very own dot com enterprise.
Goofs
- Homer receives a letter addressed to 740 Evergreen Terrace, and it says Flancrest Enterprises on it. Ned Flanders claims that it is for him, but Flanders' address is actually 744 Evergreen Terrace.
- At the U.N. club, Bart puts down his sunglasses to read the exports of Libya. The sunglasses change position between shots.
- When Bart says he's lucky to be stranded, Lewis is standing in front of him. In the next shot, he is standing away.
- When Bart takes Milhouse's inhaler, Milhouse says "Hey, I need that to live". But his mouth matches something different.
- When Bart comes out of the water with the cooler, he doesn't have a shirt on. But when Lisa takes the food away, he does have a shirt.
- When Bart, Lisa and Milhouse run away from the others, they change position. It goes as Bart, Lisa, Milhouse, then Lisa, Bart, Milhouse.
- When everyone is running away when they find the boar, Sherri/Terri and Wendell's skin is yellow instead of pale white.
- When Milhouse says "You wouldn't dare hurt me! You forgot that I have... the glasses". But Nelson takes them off. In this shot, his rip is on the left side of his shirt. Milhouse then backs away, saying "Now that you've got everything you need, I'll just get out of here", but Nelson stops him. His rip is now on the right side on his shirt.
- In the scene where Nelson says "Hey, Simpson. Race you", Ralph is on the row in front of Martin. When Ralph says "Go, banana", he is suddenly two rows in front of Martin.
- A fire is started by Milhouse's glasses, but when Nelson gives Milhouse is glasses back, it (the fire) disappears.
