Episode Information
|
"Pixelated and Afraid" is the twelfth episode of season 33 of The Simpsons and the seven hundred eighteenth episode overall. It originally aired on February 27, 2022. The episode was written by John Frink and directed by Chris Clements.
Synopsis[edit]
- "Bart and Lisa convince Homer and Marge to go on a couples retreat to Honeymoon Mountain. On the way, they change their minds about going, but Homer skids off the road and they crash. They become lost in the wilderness and take refuge in the ruins of a resort for couples."
Plot[edit]
Lisa, Marge, and Homer watch a black-and-white movie where Mick invites Moira to The Golden Gimlet for their anniversary. Lisa hopes to have the same kind of relationship as the couple in the movie when she gets married, but Marge and Homer tell her that in ten years she'll probably have a relationship like theirs.
Shortly afterward, Lisa goes to bed while Marge and Homer watch another show. The next day, Bart plays VR with Milhouse when Lisa enters to discuss her concerns about their parents' love life, scaring him with a scenario where his future girlfriend is obese and couch-bound, grabbed by mechanical hands.
To remedy the situation, they talk to their parents, and Lisa suggests using their voucher for The Saffron Togetherness Center on top of Honeymoon Mountain. After discussing the center's amenities during the drive, they admit they don't actually want to go. Marge tells Homer to turn the car around.
Homer tries to do so but skids on the ice, going off the road, breaking through a frozen river, and floating downstream in the car. They swim to safety, left stranded without a phone or vehicle.
After Homer destroys the frozen phone, they start a fire and hang their clothes to dry. Marge climbs a tree to assess the area and sees something red nearby, but when she descends, the branch breaks and their clothes burn to ashes.
They reach the red object—a heart-shaped bathtub—and uncover the sign for The Cabins at Honeymoon Mountain. Using a matchbook, they start a fire in the tub filled with leaves and branches, and begin crafting clothing and shelter from materials in the woods, unaware that a wolverine watches from the shadows.
Time passes and they grow hungry but can't find food. Eventually, they catch a fish, but the fire's smoke draws the wolverine. To protect Marge, Homer climbs a tree and uses himself as bait, but the wolverine reaches him.
Marge bravely steps in and hands Homer a stick with a statue head attached. He uses it to kill the wolverine, and they kiss under the moonlight. The next day, as Homer collects moss, he encounters a park ranger on a bike but hesitates, and the ranger leaves.
Marge suggests they follow the tracks. They pack up, say goodbye to the shack, and trek through the forest until they reach the ranger station. The episode ends with them embracing as they enjoy the sunset.
Production[edit]
The idea to do a Naked and Afraid parody came from Carolyn Omine and John Frink. The idea to make it a Homer and Marge love story came from Omine.[1] John Frink thought it was important to use the song "Pretty World" by Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66.[2] The Cabins were based on similar closed resorts on Pocono Mountains.[3][4]
Fox Broadcasting Standards were reluctant to show too much pixelating, or pixelated nudity. Showrunner Matt Selman had to place a call to Fox President Charlie Collier to get it cleared. Selman also said that when Homer and Marge killed the wolverine, he wanted it to be "justified", like in the movie The Edge.[5]
Reception[edit]
"Pixelated and Afraid" was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program in the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. However, it lost to "When These Walls Come Tumbling Down" from Arcane.[6]
"Pixelated and Afraid" was nominated for a 2023 Writers Guild of America award in Animation, but it lost to "Rectify" from Undone.[7]
