"The Last Barfighter"

"The Last Barfighter" is the twenty-second and final episode of broadcast season 32 of The Simpsons and the seven hundred and sixth episode overall. It originally aired on May 23, 2021. The episode was written by Dan Vebber and directed by Timothy Bailey. It guest stars Ian McShane as Artemis.

Synopsis[edit]

After Moe reveals to his barflies that bartenders share secrets told to them in confidence with one another, the secret society of bartenders seeks vengeance on Homer and his friends. The gang is attacked by bartenders using a drug called Antibooze, which makes it so they can never drink alcohol again.

Plot[edit]

One night, a biker arrives at The Confidential, where bartenders reunite to discuss stories told by their patrons, keeping them secret. The biker is revealed to be Moe. At Krustylu Studios, Bart and Milhouse try to enter the filming of The Krusty the Clown Show, but are stopped due to snakes escaping into the studio, so they go to the ¡Noches con Abejorrito! show, hosted by Bumblebee Man.

When the ¡No Te 'splotes! game begins, Bart is invited on stage. If he doesn't laugh while holding Humble Nun Horchata in his mouth, he wins a prize. Due to not understanding Spanish, Bart doesn't laugh and wins a bottle of Calavera Gritando, a brand of tequila in a crystal skull bottle. Homer begs Bart to give him the skull, but Bart refuses and pranks him to make him angry. That night, the skull tempts Homer by claiming Bart is too weak to drink it, so Homer switches it for Maggie in Bart's bed.

Homer takes the skull to Moe's, where Moe pours drinks for everyone. He joins in after being convinced he's their friend too. The skull tells Homer he's a fool and that he has ruined Moe's life, marking the beginning of his descent into hell. Moe wakes up the next day and starts remembering all they did while drunk. At the Squidport, Moe, still drunk, reveals that bartenders share secrets at The Confidential and exposes personal secrets to everyone. Homer, shocked, drops the skull and shatters it.

In the present, Moe is summoned by Kristof to meet with Artemis at The Confidential. She tells him the origin of the hidden society, which dates back to the construction of the pyramids in Egypt, and explains that he has broken the first and only rule. He will not be expelled, but his barflies must be cut off.

Moe warns them at the Power Plant that they will be injected with Antibooze, a drug that permanently prevents alcohol consumption. It's too late for Barney, who is injected at home. Moe, Homer, Lenny, and Carl flee as bartenders across town are alerted. Moe stays behind to hold them off with his rug and urges the others to escape to another town.

As Lenny and Carl attempt to leave in the dark, a German bartender injects them with Antibooze. Homer and Moe rush home to gather the family and flee, but Dr. Hibbert, revealed to be a bartender, is already there. He drugs Homer, and three months later, Homer becomes a changed man and devoted father. He visits Eightbucks Coffee before work and meets the others there, reflecting on how their lives have improved since quitting drinking.

They later go to the omelet bar, where Moe is now working at his lowest point. Seeing him like this, they cheer him up and say they'd still love for him to be their bartender, even if they can't drink anymore. Back at the tavern, Artemis appears and offers them the antidote. Lenny, Carl, and Barney accept it, but Homer refuses.

After a nod from Moe and the others, Artemis sends every bartender in town to track down Homer and give him the dose, though what happens next remains unknown. The next day, Lisa and Bart take Maggie on a stroll and find the broken skull on the sidewalk. It reassembles itself and warns them about the dangers of alcohol, revealing their family's genetic predisposition to addiction, including Maggie. As the skull finishes its speech, the three run away in fear.

Production[edit]

Originally "The Last Barfighter" ended with Homer being offered to chose the syringe which gave him just the right amount of drunkenness in his life. Homer picked a syringe labelled "wine with dinner", but they weren't sure what that meant exactly.^[1][2]
