Synopsis

"Cletus discovers that his wife Brandine has been hiding a secret love ... of learning."

Plot

Homer is watching Million Dollar Li$ting: Springfield on TV, watching buyers wanting to buy Burns' manor, drinking beer, before Marge approaches him and invites him to go to Moe's while she's hosting book club that night. At the book club, while everyone comments on how boring the book was, Brandine demonstrates a different level of intelligence than her usual self, shocking the other participants.

The next morning, at the First Church of Springfield and the fishing shack, words starts circulating and arrive to Cletus on how she become smart and Agnes shows him her Old Springfield Library library card. Meanwhile, at school, Lisa is giving her report to Miss Hoover on men receiving credits for women's work on science, and gets scolded and sent back to her seat after confronting the teacher. Two kids are seen passing notes on how she's "one of them".

At Cletus's farm, Cletus confronts Brandine and she reveals it's the truth. After some books fell off a tornado, she started reading books, watching ballet and completing her self-education at the Springfield Athenaeum. After seeing her change she doesn't recognize her for the woman he fell in love with and they separate. The kids, not wanting to live a different life, leave her alone and she goes to the Simpson House to stay.

At Swapper Jack's, after Marge gets a reality check on how she could have got someone better than Homer from everyone, Brandine starts telling the story of how she and Cletus met at her sister's wedding, sitting on the same hay bale. Meanwhile, at school, Lisa is getting bullied and the kids from early make an escape route for her and introduce her to the "League of Extraordinary Geniuses". Lisa almost lets the bullies know their location but they manage to keep them at bay by using a trick.

Back at home, at dinner Brandine wants to get back to her children, while Bart and Lisa tell the stories from the day at school, making Brandine cry, while in bed Marge tells Homer what the people in town thinks of them and asks Homer to talk to Cletus, who makes him worry even more for both their marriages. Brandine however realizes how she can't stay away still and wants to go back home, after advising Lisa to not hide her intelligence at that age.

Brandine in the end decides to leave her newfound life, and return to the farm, while Lisa convinces the others to reveal their true nature as "smartacus", and one by one they do. At the farm, the children greets her back, but reveal that Cletus has thought a lot and come to the conclusion of changing a bit too, and he returns with a library card and a book. At home, Marge finds out Homer has fixed stuff that were needed to demonstrate her how he has changed, including bringing Elton John and The Beatles back, which were going to be played by Lenny, Moe, Sam, Barney and Carl. In the end, Cletus presents books on his snow, Cletus on Books.
