Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a pun on the song "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by The Rolling Stones.
- The drawing game that Marge and Maggie play with Patty and Selma resembles Pictionary.
- The scene where Kent Brockman says to stand up to FOX while smoking is in reference to Edward R. Murrow and the film Good Night, and Good Luck.
- The title of the video shown in the dentist's office, "Menace Tooth Society" (which was implied to have been shown without Ludacris' permission), is a reference to the film Menace II Society. Lisa's comment that the cartoon sends mixed messages parallels critiques of the spoofed movie.
- This is the first episode that focuses on Kent Brockman.
- When ordering his ice cream cone, Homer mentions several toppings, all of which are real candies with their names slightly but noticeably changed, such as Herschel's Smooches and Mrs. Badbar. However, the names of real candies have been mentioned several times in the show before.
- As Marge runs hurriedly home to greet Bart and Lisa, the main yodeling music of the Coen Brother's film "Raising Arizona" is heard.
- Some of the shows Ned considers naughty at are Smallville (because Superdog licks himself),60 Minutes(Morleen questions pantsfold and uses the "L" word) and Channel 6 News (because of Brockman's swear word). The only shows Ned considers nice are 700 Club and Test Pattern (non-Indian).
- On one wall of Kent Brockman's office is a picture showing him on the Berlin Wall. One of the writings on the wall is German for "Kent was here".
- When Arnie Pye reports the news, his voice sounds similar to Scott Christian's.
Continuity[edit]
The "wall of casual acquaintances"
- At the beginning of the episode, Maggie draws pictures while Marge guesses what they are. Maggie also shows her artistic talent in the comic story Maggie's Crib 26.
- These are the people whose pictures appeared on the "wall of casual acquaintances", including the episode in which they visited, and the reason why they stayed:
