- The title of the episode is a reference to Josie and the Pussycats, a fictional cartoon rock band.
- The White Stripes sequence is identical in style to their music video for "The Hardest Button to Button". The two are also wearing the same outfits they were in the video. The guitar Jack is playing in the episode is his famous JB Hutto Montgomery Airline.
- "Little Green Bag" by George Baker Selection was heard when Lisa goes with adopted animals like the gang from Reservoir Dogs.
- At Jazzy Goodtimes, Ralph Wiggum plays a Fisher-Price Corn Popper.
- The Jazzy Goodtimes club is a facsimile of the House of Blues nightclub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, Ca.
- Moe calls the Titanic unsinkable in the box office.
- The couch gag references the King Homer segment from "Treehouse of Horror III" which in turn spoofs King Kong.
- A mentioned jazz musician called C.S.I. Miami is a reference to CSI: Miami.
- At the beginning of the jazz benefit they play "Caravan" by Duke Ellington.
- One of the musicians in Krusty the Clown's list of performers near the end of the episode is Richard Sakai. Sakai is one of The Simpsons producers. He is shown playing a vibraphone.
Continuity[edit]
- When Bart says "Just like Phil Collins", he doesn't open his mouth.
- Gunter and Ernst have their hair colors switched.
- Some of the people applauding Bart's street performance seem to be the wrong size, notably Jimbo, Kearney and Kent Brockman.
