Cultural references[edit]
- Actors dressed as Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus from Marvel Comics' Spiderman make an appearance at Nelson's party.
- Bart tells Nelson that he has to do a report on the Nile River, the longest river in the world, located in Africa.
- Lisa's fantasy book, Angelica Button and the Dragon King's Trundle Bed, is a parody of Harry Potter.
- The scene which follows Bart and Nelson as they enter the cafeteria through the back of the school and through the kitchens while Bart acts as a narrator is a direct parody of the celebrated three-minute tracking shot from the 1990 gangster film Goodfellas which shows Henry and Karen Hill as they enter the Copacabana nightclub through the back accompanied by Henry's (Ray Liotta) narration.
- In Homer's alternative ending for Angelica Button and the Dragon King's Trundle Bed:
- The American patriotic march, "The Stars and Stripes Forever", is heard when Greystash defeats Malicious Krubb.
- The "Merlinical Council", a reference to the magician Merlin, went to "Star Wars Land", a reference to Star Wars.
- Bart mentions the celebration Cinco de Mayo.
- The ending scene where Bart hugs Nelson's vest is a parody to end of the 2005 neo-Western romantic drama Brokeback Mountain.
Continuity[edit]
- Bart tells Lisa about the birthday party, "then we sang songs with Nelson's grandma" and in "Looking for Mr. Goodbart" Nelson laments, "And my grandmas are gone. One's in jail and one's in dirt jail."
- Lisa steals Nelson's "Ha-ha!" catchphrase like she stole Mr. Burns's "Excellent" catchphrase in "Little Big Mom".
- Mrs. Muntz's hair is black in this episode
