Cultural references[edit]
- The title of the episode is a reference to the 1993 movie Nightmare Before Christmas.
- The Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is heard during the opening sequence.
- The couch gag is a reference to A Christmas Carol.
- A modified version of "Carol of the Bells" is heard at the beginning.
- The Simpsons attended church on the Fourth Sunday in Advent.
- According to Drederick Tatum, Reverend Lovejoy compared the Three Wise Men to the Beastie Boys, an American rap rock group.
- Lovejoy says that mixing Pinot noir, the wine grape, and Vicodin is not a crime.
- The Parson mentions another wine, Sancerre, and acetaminophen.
The Eye of Providence, an ice statue of Stevie Nicks, and the Baphomet can be seen at Jack Frost's satanic garden
- At the "Pagan Winter Carnival":
- The Phone-Henge Kiosk is a reference to Stonehenge and the Ba'al Pit is a reference to Ba'al.
- Jack Frost's ice garden is present, and he's seen in Maggie's nightmare. The Eye of Providence, an ice statue of Stevie Nicks, the Baphomet, and an ice recreation of the Annuit cœptis pyramid from the Great Seal of the United States. are seen in this ice garden.
- The Strandbeest is a real sculpture created by Dutch artist Theo Jansen.
- At the hospital, Krusty says some Yiddish words to Sophie such as megillah (story) and tzimmes (traditional stew). However, a nurse brings him bacon, lobster (forbidden in kosher diet) and tref (otherwise acceptable animals prohibited for Jewish use) sandwich.
- Gnome in Your Home is a parody of the children's book The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition.
- The book The Fat In The Hat is a parody of The Cat in the Hat.
- Abe plays "O Tannenbaum" on the piano.
- Krusty reads the book The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore.
- In Krusty's advert for Minolta printers he uses the name of their competitor: "...let Minolta do your Xeroxing!"
- Homer is seen later wearing a sweater with the Minolta logo.
- Apu tells Reverend Lovejoy that Ganesh can be a Pixar hero.
- At Moe's, the Reverend gets out of the "Men's Terlet". This is a reference to All in the Family, where Archie Bunker pronounced "toilet" as "terlet" with an exaggerated accent.
- Krusty references J. J. Abrams.
- Lisa plays the "The Murder" from the Psycho film soundtrack on her violin.
- Santa's "super team" was made of Jack Frost (from Rise of the Guardians), The Abominable Snowman (from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) and former professional ice hockey player Wayne Gretzky.
- "Joy to the World" can be heard when Lindsey Naegle is recycling a nativity scene.
- Reverend Lovejoy reads Acts 11:30 from the New Testament.

- The comedians "Andrew Nice Clay", "Larry the Fable Guy" and "Joe Psicopalian" are parodies of real-life comedians Andrew Dice Clay, Larry the Cable Guy and Joe Piscopo, respectively.
- Milhouse mentions Zoroastrianism and its god, Ahura Mazda. Mazda later appears with God and the Tetragrammaton.
- The locomotive on the British Model Trains Catalogue cover connected the English cities of Derby and Leeds.
- "Shall We Gather at the River?" is sung by the Christian chorus.
- Krusty's dream while in the frozen lake is a parody of Frozen. He has a dream in which he is in an ice castle and meets his father as Olaf and his first agent as Sven
- The agent is later seen with Bob Hope.

- During A Very Krusty Christmas Special, "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson plays. Krusty and Sophie then sing a parody at the end of the episode.
- Lisa plays "The Murder" by Bernard Herrmann, made famous by the film Psycho.
- Krusty sings "Amazing Grace" by John Newton in the church.
- The church singers sing "Shall We Gather at the River?" by Robert Lowry.
