Cultural references

• The title of the episode is a reference to the children's book The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, first published in 1957.
• During the title screen gag, US presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington traveling by air balloons collide with each other, a reference to their separate February holidays being combined into one called Presidents' Day.
• During the couch gag:
  • Bart says he could have sold the sailboat painting on Craigslist.
  • The couch gag is based on Robot Chicken. Homer interacts with parodies of the children from South Park and with the The California Raisins.
  • The Nerd from Robot Chicken says he has won a Ziploc full of Jonathan Frakes' beard trimmings. Frakes is known for his work in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • Lisa is hanging a picture of Girl with a Pearl Earring in replacement of the sailboat painting.
