- The title of the episode is a reference to the 1982 movie Fitzcarraldo.
- The chalkboard gag refers to Homer betting on the Atlanta Falcons. Days before this episode aired the Falcons lost to New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

- The "army" the Colonel does not want to name is the Confederate States Army.
- The "courthouse" he does not want to name is the Appomattox Court House.
- The Springfielders pulling Deuce's Caboose up a steep hill is a parody of Fitzcarraldo, in which a steamship is pulled up a mountain in the Amazon.
- The Comic Book Guy, who is leading the fat people army, says "We Shall Overeat", a reference to the protest song "We Shall Overcome".
- At the end of the episode, the "Love Theme" from the movie Chinatown plays.
- The moon with sunglasses is a reference to Mac Tonight, a character used by McDonald's for marketing during the 1980s.

Trivia[edit]
- In the Destination Springfield event of The Simpsons: Tapped Out, Krusty was asked by Quimby for Krusty Burger to help the city create a Japanese atmosphere by serving sushi. In the episode, the Krusty Burger now has Japanese corporate parents.

Goofs[edit]
- On Hulu, when Skinner tells parents to pick up kids in South Springfield, the subtitles say Chinatown instead.
- When Krusty shows off his new menu items, he butchers the pronunciation of banh mi and pho.
- Homer and Deuce thought they were the same age, though Deuce as adult met Homer as child.
