Cultural references
- The title of the episode is a reference to the children's book The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, first published in 1957.
- During the title screen gag, US presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington traveling by air balloons collide with each other, a reference to their separate February holidays being combined into one called Presidents' Day.
- During the couch gag:
- Bart says he could have sold the sailboat painting on Craigslist.
- The couch gag is based on Robot Chicken. Homer interacts with parodies of the children from South Park and with the The California Raisins.
- The Nerd from Robot Chicken says he has won a Ziploc full of Jonathan Frakes' beard trimmings. Frakes is known for his work in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
- Lisa is hanging a picture of Girl with a Pearl Earring in replacement of the sailboat painting.
- The scene of Bart and Lisa telling the story from the couch is a reference to the film When Harry Met Sally....
- Killing Nemo is a reference to the movie Finding Nemo.
- Bart is playing the war videogame "Anzio Beach Invasion". The Battle of Anzio was one major battle of the Italian Campaign of World War II.
- On Bart's game, the Wilhelm Scream is heard.
- When Lisa tries on her hat, the song "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys plays.
- Donald Trump appears and is transformed into a troll by Lisa on a unicorn.
- Jasper Beardsley calls Homer "Blobby Fisher", a reference to the American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer.
- Bobby Fisher is later referenced on a flyer.
- Homer calls the Knight "Dr. Horse", a reference to Dr. House.
- Homer applies the Budapest Gambit opening to beat Jasper.
- Bart can not believe how Homer knows the rules of chess when he can't even remember the rules of Chutes and Ladders.
