Cultural references
- The title is a play on the film Das Boot. However, since Bus is of male grammatical gender, "Der Bus" would be correct German.
- Most of the episode about being on the island is a spoof of the classic novel Lord of the Flies, although in the end of the story the boys are rescued by a naval officer, who themselves are in the middle of a war. This ending is however true to the 1990 film version of Lord of the Flies, which made numerous changes to the original story.
- When the kids are squabbling in the classroom, Principal Skinner restores order by banging his shoe on the desk. Skinner's actions are similar to Soviet dictator Nikita Khrushchev at the UN allegedly banging his shoe on a table.
- When the rest of the children (led by Nelson) are chasing Bart, Lisa, and Milhouse and have smeared charcoal ash on their faces; Ralph Wiggum's face resembles Peter Criss of KISS.
Movie moments
- Milhouse swings across the chasm on a vine but refuses to throw it back to Lisa and Bart, similar to the behavior of Satipo towards Indiana Jones in the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark..
- Bart said that the kids would be like the Swiss Family Robinson with more cursing.
Trivia
- The fishermen were voiced by Asian voice actors. Originally the producers wanted the lines to be done in Mandarin. However, the voice actors convinced the Simpsons producers that Cantonese would be a better fit, as that language is spoken more often by Chinese fishermen and sailors, as many of them live in the coastal regions of China, where Cantonese is most commonly spoken.

- Homer buys several anti-stress items found in workplaces. He uses them all and becomes stressed as a result. The scene was cut due to it taking up too much time in the episode.
Goofs
- Homer receives a letter addressed to 740 Evergreen Terrace, and it says Flancrest Enterprises on it. Ned Flanders claims that it is for him, but Flanders' address is actually 744 Evergreen Terrace.
- At the U.N. club, Bart puts down his sunglasses to read the exports of Libya. The sunglasses change position between shots.
- When Nelson and Bart have the fruit race between the apple and orange, we hear the children cheering when we see the overhead shot. Only problem is - the children's mouths aren't moving!
- When Bart says he's lucky to be stranded, Lewis is standing in front of him. In the next shot, he is standing away.
- When Bart takes Milhouse's inhaler, Milhouse says "Hey, I need that to live". But his mouth matches something different.
- When Bart comes out of the water with the cooler, he doesn't have a shirt on. But when Lisa takes the food away, he does have a shirt.
- When everyone races to the cooler in the morning, they cheer but their mouths don't move.
- At Milhouse's "trial", he moves his "prison cell" to move at least a foot next to her. But in the next shot, they are very close.
- When Bart, Lisa and Milhouse run away from the others, they change position. It goes as Bart, Lisa, Milhouse, then Lisa, Bart, Milhouse.
- When everyone is running away when they find the boar, Wendell's skin is yellow instead of pale white.
- When everyone eats the boar at the end, the boar is completely intact - but it's only Lisa not eating it.
- When Homer moves stuff to the table to start his website, he whistles but his mouth never moves.
- When Homer says God is his favorite fiction character at the beginning, his mouth moves to something different.
- At the U.N. meeting, Bart puts his sunglasses down - but it is moving mid-air.
- On the bus, when Otto throws the tape out, we see the children, nothing else. Soon a cooler appears.
- When Milhouse says he's getting "swimmer's ear", his mouth is out of sync.
- When the kids wash up at the island, they're dry. They were in the water a minute ago.
- The food Bart takes out of the cooler in the island is a bag of OREOs. When Lisa takes the food away from everyone, it's a bag of cookies, which Ralph originally had.
- The door of the cooler changes when the children find no food in the morning.
- Milhouse's arms are beside his head when the children find him after they find no food. Next shot, one of his arms is by his belly.
- When Milhouse says "You wouldn't dare hurt me! You forgot that I have...the glasses". But Nelson takes them off. In this shot, his rip is on the left side of his shirt. Milhouse then backs away, saying "Now that you've got everything you need, I'll just get out of here", but Nelson stops him. His rip is now on the right side on his shirt.
- Nelson is seen sitting in front of Martin in the "trial", But when Lisa says that Milhouse was the only witness, Nelson has disappeared.
- When Bart says "No talking in the cage", Milhouse is standing next to Bart. Then when Lisa says Milhouse was the only witness, Bart is a good 10 feet away from Milhouse.
- Throughout the "trial", the twins, Sherri and Terri, change position.
- When Bart, Lisa and Milhouse run away, there is twigs on the fire that burned out in the morning. But almost instantly, it vanishes.
- Just before Homer meets Bill Gates, the pens and pencil in the butter alternate.
- When Bart, Lisa and Milhouse run away from the others, Lisa steps on a puddle, but no ripple or splash is made.
- When Bart, Lisa and Milhouse run away from the others, Milhouse is out of breath, and when he falls over, he has sweat. He didn't have the sweat previously.
- When Milhouse swings the vine, he lands but the vine doesn't. Two shots later, there is a vine.
- When everyone finds that it was the boar, not Milhouse, that ate all the food, it is noticeable because he has a Chippos packet on his tusk. But when Lisa says that if the boar survived, and that there is reasonable food, the Chippos packet has disappeared.
- When eating the boar, the children are moving. But in the final wide shot, they aren't moving a inch.
- At the Model U.N. meeting, Bart finishes his unsuccessful report on Libya by placing his papers on the right side on the desk. Next shot, it is on the middle.
- As like the scene before Homer meets Bill Gates, the pens and pencils change when he begins his website.
- In the scene where Nelson says "Hey, Simpson. Race you", Ralph is on the row in front of Martin. When Ralph says "Go, banana", he is suddenly two rows in front of Martin.
- When the kids wash up on the island, they change position. Bart, Milhouse, Ralph, Nelson and Terri are still in the water. All of them are soon on land with Lisa, Wendell, Martin, Lewis and Sherri.
- There is 10 kids washed up on the island. But in a very far shot, we only see 6 kids.
- A fire is started by Milhouse's glasses, but when Nelson gives Milhouse is glasses back, it (the fire) disappears.
- The hole in the bus causing it to sink changes position when it hits the rock and when Bart goes to get the cooler.
- As soon as the fish bites Bart's butt causing a rip in his shorts, almost instantly, the rip disappears.
- Everyone thinks Milhouse ate all the food so they approach him, and are soon very close. Soon, they are further away.
- At the trial, it is, from left to right, Lisa, Milhouse (in a cage), and Bart. Soon, Bart disappears.
- Bart, Lisa and Milhouse escape from the others by using a vine that wasn't there in the previous shots.
