Cultural references
- The episode's title is a reference to the procedural law of habeas corpus.
- The episode's couch gag is based on Google Chrome's Dinosaur Game, the famous browser game where the player guides a pixelated t-rex across a side-scrolling landscape.
- The majority of the people from Springfield are in favor of not celebrating Columbus Day due to Christopher Columbus' problematic behavior.
- Opposition to Columbus celebrations has been a topic of debate for many years, the main reasons include the treatment of the indigenous populations during European colonization and Christopher Columbus himself, considered to have exploited and enslaved indigenous population.
- All of the characters not in favor of banning the celebration have an Italian background. Christopher Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa, now Italy.
- Helen Lovejoy is worried that one of the books in the DIY free libraries might be the Kama Sutra.
- According to Skinner, the public school library does not have books written after 1945, making the children think that Iceland is still a kingdom. The Kingdom of Iceland lasted until 17 June 1944, to then become a republic.
