Cultural references

• The title of the episode is a reference to the 1993 movie Nightmare Before Christmas.
• The Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is heard during the opening sequence.
• The couch gag is a reference to A Christmas Carol.
  • Homer is the Ghost of Christmas Present.
  • Marge is Jacob Marley.
  • Lisa is the Ghost of Christmas Past.

• A modified version of "Carol of the Bells" is heard at the beginning.

• At the "Pagan Winter Carnival":
  • The Phone-Henge Kiosk is a reference to Stonehenge and the Ba'al Pit is a reference to Ba'al.
  • Jack Frost's ice garden is present, and he's seen in Maggie's nightmare. The Eye of Providence, an ice statue of Stevie Nicks, the Baphomet, and an ice recreation of the Annuit cœptis image from the Great Seal of the United States. are seen in this ice garden.
  • The Strandbeest is a real sculpture created by Dutch artist Theo Jansen.
• At the hospital, Krusty says some Yiddish words to Sophie such as megillah (story) and tzimmes (traditional stew). However, a nurse brings him bacon, lobster (forbidden in kosher diet) and tref (otherwise acceptable animals prohibited for Jewish use) sandwich.
• Gnome in Your Home is a parody of the children's book The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition.
• The book The Fat In The Hat is a parody of The Cat in the Hat.
