Synopsis[edit]

"In Michigan, Reverend Lovejoy uncovers the reason why Bode Wright left and came to Springfield. When the congregation learns about his crime, they must decide whether to banish their new priest."

Plot[edit]

At the First Church of Springfield, while the bullies manage parking—badly—the church appears full, but Mr. Burns is seen at home reading his version of the Bible. Bode notices that fewer people are actually attending. Bode tries to incorporate other religions, while Ned feels disappointed and misses the old ways.

When Bode mentions his belief that God can be either male or female, Lisa imagines herself singing "Maybe This Time", reflecting on her three beliefs: in Jesus, Buddha, and science. Compelled to leave, Ned is stopped by Rod and Todd, who remind him of his own rule—not leaving until the pastor says so—so he sits back down.

Meanwhile, in Michigan, Reverend Lovejoy and Helen visit the Blessed Buy Megachurch, where Bode was fired. The church has some strange practices that make Lovejoy uncomfortable, and he is escorted to Preacher Mac.

Lovejoy asks about Bode, and the preacher gives them a USB sticker containing proof. Back in Springfield, Marge warns Lisa that she'll be disappointed if she believes Bode will remain pastor, noting that Springfield rarely accepts new things. She gestures to Lisa's vision board of past disappointments, which falls off the wall.

The Lovejoys return to town quickly. Meanwhile, Homer takes Bode to Moe's to seek forgiveness, which Bode grants. Bode then visits Ned's house for a scripture-based confrontation, which he wins.

During a tense moment at the church, Lovejoy returns and reveals what he discovered in Michigan: Bode was fired for burning the Bible. The next Tuesday, Lisa moderates a debate between the two priests, but the Springfieldians do not accept Bode's plea for forgiveness, and Bode agrees to leave town.

The Simpson family invites him over for dinner, and later at church, Lisa asks Bode why he burned the Bible. He explains that God resides in the heart, not in a cathedral or a book. Lisa tells him that the people in town do not understand subtext.

Bode gets the message when townspeople hold signs urging him to leave, and someone throws a brick through a window. He leaves, and Chief Wiggum tells Lou that he has lost his faith after witnessing the event.
