"The Star of the Backstage" is the first episode of season 33 of The Simpsons and the seven-hundred and seventh episode overall. It originally aired on September 26, 2021. The episode was written by Elisabeth Kiernan Averick and directed by Rob Oliver. It guest stars Kristen Bell as Marge's singing voice and Sara Chase as Sasha Reed.

Synopsis[edit]

"A musical comes to life in Springfield as Marge stages a revival of her beloved high school show - but her wonderful memories are threatened by the return of a rival from the past."

Plot[edit]

At a memorial for Franklin Chase, Marge sees a VHS showing a musical, Y2K: The Millennium Bug, where she participated along with other Springfielders. Mrs. Chase gives Marge her High School prompt book, prompting more memories and the production of a musical, with her as stage manager.

Lenny however breaks his hip and is replaced by Homer, incited by Lisa and Bart. The people from back in 1992 return to reprise the show, and they try calling Sasha Reed, but to no avail. Sasha appears however on stage, singing about her past since they last seen her.

Soon after she organizes a meeting with the cast at the lake house, but since Marge is not part of it and just a manager she's not invited. The next day Marge brings back pieces from the memories of their past and they start another song about the past, however Marge finds out she was never part of it herself through all the experiences they had.

Marge leaves the theater alone and feeling rejected and she confesses her troubles to her mother at her apartment, and with the help of her computer, she starts researching on Sasha, and the next day updates the cast with the new discoveries.

However, instead of getting them hate Sasha, she worsened the situation, and they all hate her, making her even more angry. At home, she gets angry and doesn't sleep all night and Homer sings her a song to make her understand her mistake.

She goes to Moe's to apologize, calling the cast to regroup and make the musical happen, to a big success. Marge is feeling down for being left out of it once again, but two people invite her to dine at Ruthie's Diner because they admire her work as stage manager, while Homer invites the cast to party at the house.

Production[edit]

The episode was originally named "No Day but Yesterday".[1][2]

During the San Diego Comic-Con At Home 2021 panel, a preview of one of the songs was shown. The image has Homer in his underpants singing whilst Marge looks annoyed. Later it was revealed that 7 songs will be present in the episode and that one of the song is named A Delicate Approach.[3][4]

CXG composer Jack Dolgen wrote the music for this episode.[5]

Reception[edit]

"The Star of the Backstage" was nominated for a 2022 Writers Guild of America award in Animation, but it lost to "Planteau" from Tuca & Bertie.[6]
