- The scene of Bart and Lisa telling the story from the couch is a reference to the film When Harry Met Sally....
- Killing Nemo is a reference to the movie Finding Nemo.
- Bart is playing the war videogame "Anzio Beach Invasion". The Battle of Anzio was one major battle of the Italian Campaign of World War II.
- When Lisa tries on her hat, the song "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys plays.
- Jasper Beardley calls Homer "Blobby Fisher", a reference to the American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer.
