Cultural references
- Milhouse brought his jacks to the Veteran's Park.
- When parents are flushing kids out of cattails and snaring some in nets, this is a reference to Planet of the Apes when Colonel Taylor and two of his fellow astronauts first encounter human life, only to be victims of an ape hunting party shortly afterwards.
- Bart takes a Troll doll to church. He also sings "Troll Man" to the tune of the song "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave.
- Ms. Albright passes round a replica of the slingshot that David used to slay Goliath.
- Bart struts down the street to the tune of "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. The sequence is a reference to the movie Saturday Night Fever.
- Homer seeing Bart preparing to go on his first date sings these songs: "Sunrise, Sunset" from the musical Fiddler on the Roof, "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin, and "Yes! We Have No Bananas" by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn.
- Bart talks about an episode of Martin he watched on FOX.
- Bart says: "Smart, beautiful, and a liar! So much better than that Sarah, plain and tall.", then causing a girl, most likely Sarah, go running off crying, referencing the book Sarah, Plain and Tall.
- The song during Jessica and Bart's date is "Misirlou" by Dick Dale.
- Bart compares Jessica to a Milk Dud, saying that she's "sweet on the outside, poison on the inside."
- Ralph asks the librarian boy if they have Go, Dog. Go!

- Jessica Lovejoy being an accomplished Majorette is a reference to Pretty Poison.
- Bart says that Jessica's hair smells like red Froot Loops.
- After Bart is accused of stealing from the church collection plate, he is forced to wear a straitjacket and mask in church, which is a reference to Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.
- Grampa says that he was the one that cancelled Star Trek.
- Reverend Lovejoy covers his ears and sings "Bringing In the Sheaves" by Knowles Shaw.
Goofs
- Bart's calendar shows April has 31 days and May has 30. It's actually the other way around.
