Cultural references[edit]
- Marge is seen reading (and fantasizing about) a romance novel titled Love in the Time of Scurvy, which is a pun on Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez.
- Ned compares Lisa's sax to Gabriel's trumpet which, according to the Christian tradition, the archangel Gabriel blows the horn to announce Judgment Day.
- The "extra credit question" Elizabeth Hoover asks the students is "What was Christopher Columbus actually looking for when he discovered America?", to which Allison Taylor correctly answers "A passage to India".
- Marge mentioned visiting Graceland, the mansion of Elvis Presley.
- Bart mentions America's Most Wanted.
- The presentation of the "second best" band in America is presented by Avis Car Rental. The band is composed by several American musicians, including:
- Art Garfunkel, who was part of the iconic duo Simon & Garfunkel alongside with Paul Simon. The duo had a troubled relationship, with Simon having a more prominent solo career.
- Jim Messina, part of the duo Loggins and Messina, composed by him and Kenny Loggins.
- John Oates, part of the famous rock duo Hall & Oates, in which Daryl Hall was generally the lead vocalist.
- The band's song, "Born to Runner-Up", is a pun on Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run".

- Homer's "In America" speech while guarding his sugar pile comes from Tony Montana's speech from Scarface.
- Lisa's diorama is based on Oliver Twist, the novel by English author Charles Dickens.
- The beekeeper says the phrase "To the Beemobile!", parodying the phrase "To the Batmobile!" from the 1960s Batman TV series. The other beekeeper wondered if he was referring to his Chevy.
- Homer's line "Melting! Oh, what a world!" when the sugar melts is the same used by the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz.
- Nelson's diorama's name is The Grapes of Wrath, the acclaimed novel by John Steinbeck.
- Before eating it, Üter's diorama was based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
- Ralph's diorama contest entry is just original Star Wars action figures: his collection includes Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Chewbacca.[1]

- Marge says that Homer lost $40 by not going into work that day. Assuming Homer works an average 8-hour shift, that means Homer makes $5 an hour, or not much over minimum wage, which was $4.25 an hour in the USA at the time the episode originally aired.

- Principal Skinner's favorite Star Wars character is Chewbacca.
