[hide]Synopsis[edit]
- "Mr. Burns goes undercover as "Fred" at the nuclear power plant and becomes friends with Homer and the gang. Burns implements all sorts of amenities to improve his employees' lives, but a jealous Smithers plots to bring the old, bitter Burns back and destroy Fred."
Plot[edit]
At the Power Plant, it's "Take Your Kids to Work Day." Lenny, not having kids, hires two, but one deserts him after being called to another job for Krusty. When the parents leave their kids with Mr. Burns, he turns it into "Put Your Kids to Work Day," forcing them to work at the plant. Lisa escapes and follows Burns, accusing him, but Burns flees into the bathroom. Lisa leaves, disgusted by a decomposing tuna sandwich left on the sink. Burns checks the writing on the bathroom stalls, reacts innocently to lewd artwork, and discovers multiple drawings showing employees' hatred for him. In desperation, Burns opens the door to the ladies' bathroom and finds a hanging Burns effigy set on fire.
To investigate the discontent, Burns decides to go undercover. Smithers assembles a team to create a disguise. Inside his new robotic body, Burns, as Fred Kranepool, approaches an employee, who tells him to get lost. Homer invites Fred to sit with him, Lenny, and Carl. Burns socializes briefly, earning their trust, but when he tries to ask for grievances, the back-to-work whistle blows, and the Hounds are released to signify the end of lunch. Burns realizes the cruelty of this practice, especially after Lenny admits he contracted rabies from a bite. Fred joins the group at Moe's, where Homer offers him a beer, and they share that all they want from Burns is friendship and respect.
Since Fred takes Barney's seat, Barney uses Moe's new drive-through service in his Plow King's plow. Later, Fred continues bonding with the group at Luna Park, Moe's, fishing, and singing karaoke. At Burns' manor, Smithers grows worried, especially when Burns declares the workers his friends. The family is also concerned after Homer keeps spending time with a suspicious new person. At the plant, Fred tells Smithers to back off. After banter with the group, they ask Fred to talk to Burns about treating them with respect. Fred reluctantly agrees and performs a convincing scene, alternating between his real voice and Fred's. The performance, overheard by the group, convinces them that Burns should "die out" his old self and remain Fred permanently, further worrying Smithers.
Homer skips a family meal to work on Saturday, where the plant has been transformed with valet parking, Segways, a custom food court, and other worker-friendly amenities. When the group mentions Fred might fire Smithers, Smithers reveals the truth about Fred to Homer, warning that Burns is taking things too far. Later, Lenny and Carl arrive, and Lenny insults Mr. Burns. Fred becomes enraged and tries to strangle Lenny but is stopped by Homer, who breaks one of Fred's robotic arms. Fred escapes, but Burns confronts him from inside the suit. Fred seizes control of Burns and attempts to eliminate him.
Homer intervenes as Burns delivers the final blow. After speeches from both, everything returns to normal. Fred's suit is discarded in radioactive waste, and it's revealed that the Burns in the fight was one of Fred's creators. At the end, a new coworker, Don Phoneyman, arrives. Lenny tries to prove he's Burns by releasing the Hounds on him, but they attack Lenny instead, and Carl falls through a trap door. Burns, in a new and improved Fred suit, sings karaoke with his three friends again.
