Cuba gained independence from Spain in 1898. In 1959 Fidel Castro overthrew dictator Fulgencio Batista and set up a communist regime. In 1961 the [[USA]] and the Soviet Union brought the world closer to nuclear war when an American spy plane took photos of the Soviets building nuclear missles in Cuba. After a 19-day stand off the Soviets agreed to back down, but only if the US promised not to invade Cuba (which they didn't).

Homer, Mr. Burns and Smithers visited Cuba when they were on the run from the U.S. Federal Government. Mr. Burns tried to buy Cuba with a trillion-dollar bill, but Fidel Castro stole the bill and the trio were forced out of the country.[1]
