Synopsis
- "When Grampa falls victim to a phone scammer, the Simpsons set out on a mission of vengeance to get his money back."
Plot
In the past, at the Springfield Meatball Factory, Grampa, Old Jewish man and Jasper receive their first employment check, and then go for a drink at Mac's, noticing the Social Security taxes and complaining about them, betting money on animal fights. Back in the present, they start complaining about wanting their taxes back in the pension at the Springfield Post Office and then retrieving them.
All the old Springfielders go around on a buying spree, and then reunite to play cribbage, before going back at the Springfield Retirement Castle. There, Grampa was sleeping when he receives a call from Bart saying he's been arrested. A police man takes the phone and asks him to send the bail money within 90 minutes or he'll be sent to the downtown juvenile detention center.
Grampa goes to Best Western Union to do a money transfer and finds many other old people doing the same for their grandchildren. The next day, Grampa sees Bart playing soccer and is grateful for his release, but Bart affirms he hasn't been jailed at all and that Grampa has been scammed.
At home, Grampa reveals he was scammed for ten thousand dollars, his inheritance for Homer, giving him nightmares at night, thinking how much their life would get better from having that much money. At a parent meeting at the Elementary School, after Homer loudly refused to chip in for a fundraising thermometer, Skinner suggested Marge to visit the S.C.A.M.S., Support & Care for Adults Manipulated by Scams, meeting at the Springfield Community Center.
Grampa and Homer join the meeting for the elderly and their family, but Homer laughs at him and his children getting scammed, saying he never will be, but finds out he got scammed in a pyramid scheme and goes to the Castle to apologize to Grampa. The caller calls once again and using a software Lisa pinpoints it their location to 1300 Business Loop C.
Once they reach the destination, they find many scammers working, including Moe, who was one of the people at the meeting. The police doesn't arrest them because they're just employees and other scam agencies are going to raise up as soon as this was taken down. Angered, Marge kicks a bin and gift card pop out of it, so they go to 'Zerz to use them.
After eating $500 of appetizers, the family sees Loki appearing and his forms, revealing that he was behind all the deception. After the dinner, Chalmers refuses to give a woman $20 to fill her car, thinking it was another scam, but Marge tries to see if she can still trust, and lends her the money, trusting she'll mail her the money back as promised. One week later, she receives the money back, believing it was from her, but it was Grampa giving them some security, while Moe is seen back at scamming people on the phone.
Production
Originally, at the end of the episode, it was revealed that Grampa had been cheating at cribbage for years to get the money that was taken by the scammer.[1] The producers reached out to Neil Gaiman for visual inspiration of Loki. Gaiman suggested they use Arthur Rackham's "Rhinemaidens" picture for inspiration.[2]
