- The name of this episode is a reference to the Jimi Hendrix song "Purple Haze", specifically the line "'scuse me while I kiss the sky".
- The name of the shop Teenage Pasteland is most likely a reference to the song by The Who called "Baba O'Riley". The song name is often mistaken for "Teenage Wasteland" due to the phrase being repeated throughout the song.
- When Lisa shuts down the power for the last time in the episode, Sideshow Mel says: "I say we'll tear her limb from limb". This is a reference to the Bob Dylan song "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream".
