- The episode title is a pun on "How I Spent My Summer Vacation", which is the title of a 1997 romantic comedy film as well as an often-assigned topic in school writing assignments.
- Homer's favorite TV drama MTC, Monkey Trauma Center is a reference to the TV series Trauma Center, one of the first medical drama series.
- Taxicab Conversations is a parody of Taxicab Confessions.
- Homer dreamed of being a photographer for Playboy.
- Lisa says that Homer takes her to places he hates, like Olive Garden.
- The Rolling Stones welcome everyone to The Rolling Stones' Rock N' Roll Fantasy Camp by playing the opening chords of their song "Start Me Up".
- At Elvis Costello's Instrument Shack, "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello plays.
- At Lenny Kravitz's Thread Shed, "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz plays.

Goofs[edit]
- Raphael's mustache and hair are two different colors while Homer's in his taxi.
- When Elvis Costello takes Homer's guitar and drives back to get the pick, the guitar changes color from red to a mustard sort of color.
- After Homer and his gang get their instruments (all guitars) and start singing, Homer's guitar changes form and color.
- At the concert, some people change between shots:
- For most of the scene, Legs is with the rest of the mafia, and when Homer is chased by the rock stars, Legs moves along a few places.
- In that same scene, Ruth Powers, Bumblebee Man, and Larry are replaced by Legs, a person resembling Leonard Nimoy, and Larry Burns.
