Cultural references[edit]
- The name of this episode is a reference to the Jimi Hendrix song "Purple Haze", specifically the line "'scuse me while I kiss the sky".
- The name of the shop Teenage Pasteland is most likely a reference to the song by The Who called "Baba O'Riley". The song name is often mistaken for "Teenage Wasteland" due to the phrase being repeated throughout the song.
- When Lisa shuts down the power for the last time in the episode, Sideshow Mel says: "I say we'll tear her limb from limb". This is a reference to the Bob Dylan song "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream".
- The music playing when Lisa is in the museum is Jupiter from Gustav Holst's The Planets.
- The name Do You Want Lies With That? is a reference to the phrase "do you want fries with that?".
- Groundskeeper Willie says that he is an Aberdeen F.C. fan.
- "Vincent" by Don McLean plays during the meteor shower.
- The scene in which the lights explode is a parody of the home run scene from The Natural. The music is also from the same scene in the movie.
- Marge shouts "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" when she is deprived of sleep. This is Saturday Night Live's famous opening catch-phrase.
- In the background of the toy store, there is a box that says "Clay D'oh". The item's name is a parody of Play-Doh combined with Homer's "D'oh".
- The picture on which Horatio McCallister draws Lisa's petition by way of signature is an image of the closing chapter of Moby-Dick. It depicts the Pequod being smashed by an upwards lunge from Moby Dick.
- Declan Desmond mentions Machiavelli while in the playground.
- Mayor Quimby's comment about the fading southern belle is an allusion to the Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire.
- Ralph says his Hall-monitor sash reads Ultraman.
- Carl Carlson first mentions his childhood in Iceland in this episode. It was revealed in the Season 24 episode "The Saga of Carl", which aired ten years later, that Carl was adopted.

Goofs[edit]
- Even though the power is out at the end, lights can still be seen through the windows of 742 Evergreen Terrace.
- In the film at the end, Dolph has Kearney's voice and vice versa.
- When the streetlights come back on, Selma's dress is pink rather than Blue.
- Lisa's telescope is consistently shown pointing backwards. The telescope is a Newtonian design which has the eyepiece near the front but the episode shows the eyepiece near the back by the primary mirror.
