Goofs[edit]

  • While at the WNBA game when choosing the contestant for the shot, Homer stands up and no one is in the seat to his left. Then when Flanders makes the shot, there is someone sitting next to him.
  • Before Homer prayed for the remote to be found, it is not under the couch until after he prays.
  • When Moe comes in wearing a fake mustache at the community outreach center, it was brown, but when everyone leaves out of the center, his mustache turns gray.
  • The seat Homer was sitting in would be the same as Flanders seat, as it is the same arena. Regardless of the teams playing.

Cultural references[edit]

  • The episode's title is a reference to the 1989 movie Say Anything....
  • SpongeBob SquarePants is mentioned in Bart's blackboard gag.
  • The postcard of God that Homer looks at and that changes position in relation to how he looks, is equal to God painted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
  • The figure on the drywall of the Simpson house destroyed by the plumber is a reference to the paint Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze.
  • The title of Rev. Lovejoy's sermon in church "God: the original Toni Soprano" is clearly a reference to the TV series The Sopranos.
  • The Country Cort House of Springfield, with its neoclassical buildings and lion statues is a reference to Trafalgar Square in London.
  • While Homer in his underwear in his church, drinks beer from the goblet, listens and sings I Was Made for Lovin' You by the Kiss.
  • The biblical commandment not yet violated that Ned Flanders says he has not yet been to Homer's church party, turns out to be eating chili fries, so it means that the other 9 commandments had already been violated (so for example also V: do not kill, VI: Do not commit impure acts, VII: do not steal).
  • Flanders is happy when his children start speaking many tongues and squirming, even if these are classic symptoms of demonic possession.
  • When Marge says that God.. "..in the bible..turning people into salt" she quotes the bible Gen 19.26 an episode from the narration of Sodom and Gomorrah

Trivia[edit]

  • The jury in this episode has many of the same people as the jury in the fake trial in "The Great Money Caper", namely Cletus, Louie, the Yale man and the Mayo Clinic doctor.
  • Sideshow Mel is one of the alcohol anonymous at the churches alcohol anonymous program with Barney. Mel's alcohol problems were first eluded to in "I Love Lisa" (in a clip of Mel drunk at the Krusty's upcoming 29th Anniversary Special).
  • The scene of WNBA basketball player of Chinese nationality Fung Pang-Li (non-existent character) appears to be an irony on Yao Ming, also very tall and the first Chinese to play in the NBA (just in the release period of the episode), in fact the uniform of his basketball team is the same as that used by the Houston Rockets, Yao Ming's team.
  • The Wienermobile used in the episode really existed.
  • The reaction of the skater monkey to the score received is an irony on 2002 Winter Olympics figure skating scandal. Also Carl later points out the scoring scandal.
  • The scene of Dr. Hibbert playing the claw machine at the boowling is a replica of a moment of episode s7 e12 "Team Homer" starring Otto Mann.

Notes[edit]

  • Maggie Roswell returns to the show permanently starting with this episode.
