Cultural references[edit]
- The episode's title is a reference to the 1986 Disney movie, The Great Mouse Detective.
- The face change made to Tom Brokaw is a reference to the movie Face/Off.
- The use of Sideshow Bob as a profiler and his maximum security detention is a reference to the film The Silence of the Lambs.
- Sideshow Bob cites William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar as soon as the preparation of the lure puppet is complete.
- The way to celebrate Mardi Gras with floats, parade, disguises and many people is a typical New Orleans celebration party.

- Frank Grimes' gravestone appears to look different from "Homer's Enemy" and "Alone Again, Natura-Diddily".
- This is the fourth digitally colored episode, but all episodes after this have used digital coloring.
- Chief Wiggum has an unsolved Rubik's Cube on his desk.
- Sideshow Bob references Frasier by saying Frasier's catchphrase, "Dear God!"
- In the FXX version, the scene where Homer says "Oooh! We're up so high!" was removed.
- The motto on the Wiggum badge "To protect and serve" is the motto of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
Continuity[edit]
- This episode serves as a sequel to "Homer's Enemy".
- At the beginning of the episode, Marge sets a new "personal best" vacuuming record and finds that she's accidentally vacuumed up Maggie. In the comic story Maggie's Crib 20, household chores (in this case, bath time) also result in Maggie going missing.
- Marge says that she will never go to Paris. Bart has gone to the city in "The Crepes of Wrath" and the whole family later goes in "Bart-Mangled Banner".
- When Sideshow Bob gets shocked, his hair becomes like a Afro, just like how he looked like in his first appearance in "The Telltale Head"
- Homer covers his face with a curtain and yells "Don't look at me!" This is exactly the same response Marge's father gave in the episode "Fear of Flying", when Marge discovered he was a flight steward. Marge's father even tried to cover his face with his apron.
- Homer's list of people who want him dead includes:
- Mr. Burns, has threatened Homer's life in several episodes.
- The Emperor of Japan, Homer threw him into a bin of sumo thongs in "Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo".
- Fat Tony, Tony tried to kill Homer in "The Twisted World of Marge Simpson" and "Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge".
- Stephen Hawking, Homer annoyed Hawking in "They Saved Lisa's Brain".
- George Bush Sr., Homer and Bush had a rivalry in "Two Bad Neighbors".
- PBS, Homer tried to con PBS in "Missionary: Impossible".
- The late Frank Grimes, He had a large hatred of Homer before Grimes' death in "Homer's Enemy".
- The state of Florida, Homer caused havoc and injured Captain Jack in "Kill the Alligator and Run".
Goofs[edit]
- In the scene where Homer and Bob are chasing Frank Grimes Jr., you can see his cape fall off. Then you see Homer and Bob again. But when you see Junior again, he is still wearing his cape. Then, when he turns into the alley his cape is gone again.
- After Moe's pickle jar gets shot, there is a shot that goes to the wall and slowly looks at each picture. When we first see it, there are 6 pictures shown. 2 larger ones on the right side, and 4 smaller pictures vertically down the left side. The picture in question is the large one in the bottom right corner. Originally, it is Moe in Egypt with the jar, and then when they do all the close up pictures, it suddenly changes to a picture of Moe and his jar laying on the beach.
