- Bart wears a T-shirt of the fictional English heavy metal band Spinal Tap. Their World Tour includes shows in London, Paris, Munich and Springfield.
- Homer finds a can of Billy Beer in the jacket he used to wear in rock concerts. This American beer started to be produced in 1977.
- Selma compares Homer's appearance to that of "Davy Crockett in his bald-skin cap". This is a play on the coonskin cap that the American politician Davy Crockett used to wear.
- Milhouse traded 50,000 Bazooka Joe comic strips for his jacket.
- Comic Book Guy tries to sell a Spinal Tap T-Shirt depicting the band kicking Muammar Gaddafi in the butt. Gaddafi was a Libyan revolutionary who ruled Libya from 1969 until his death by rebel forces in 2011.
- In an interview with KBBL, David St. Hubbins says that after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Spinal Tap's records started selling in the "dismal" side of the Iron Curtain. He is referring to the Eastern Bloc, the group of countries under the influence or control of the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Goofs
- During the scene where Nelson is mocking Bart while waiting for the bus, his vest and shirt switch colors during the zoomed in part when he says "polly wolly crappy."
- In this episode, Comic Book Guy has a full beard instead of his usual stubble.
- When Otto crashes into the street sign at the end and bends it, it is seen unbent in the next shot.
- During the bus scene Sherri and Terri's hair and dress colors are switched.
