Lisa waking up to find the pony's head and screaming is a reference to a famous scene from The Godfather
- At the beginning of the episode, Homer dreams he is one of the apes in the iconic "Dawn of Man" sequence from the 1968 epic science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. While the other apes learn to use fire and tools, Homer uses the monolith as a back-scratcher and falls asleep leaning against it.
- The initial fanfare from Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, "Sunrise", which is featured in the film, is also heard.
- "The Blue Danube" waltz by Johann Strauss II is briefly heard when Homer is woken up by the telephone.
- Music pieces heard during the children's acts at Springfield Elementary School include:
- The "Sabre Dance" by Aram Khachaturian is heard during Kim's act.
- Milhouse performs the jazz standard "Sweet Georgia Brown" by Ben Bernie using spoons.
- Sherri and Terri perform a knife-throwing act to the sound of the can-can.
- Chuck Berger sings "My Ding-a-Ling", a novelty song by Chuck Berry.
- Lisa plays an off-key version of "Stormy Weather" by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler.
- In the videotape of Lisa taking her first steps, Homer is watching the American TV series Fantasy Island.
- The name of the pet shop All Creatures Great and Cheap is a pun on the 1975 British film title All Creatures Great and Small.
- The first pony Millicent offered to Homer was sired by Seattle Slew. Seattle Slew was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who became the tenth winner of the American Triple Crown (1977). She also mentions the Kentucky Derby.
- Lisa waking up to find the pony's head and screaming is a reference to the famous scene from The Godfather, where Jack Woltz wakes to find the severed head of his prized racehorse next to him.
- At the stable, Lisa plays "Wildfire" by Michael Martin Murphey for Princess.
- While driving home from the Kwik-E-Mart, Homer falls asleep behind the wheel and dreams that he is in Slumberland, drawn in the style of Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland.
- An instrumental cover version of The Beatles song "Golden Slumbers" plays during the sequence.
- Bart and Lisa see an episode of The Tonight Show, hosted by Johnny Carson. Ed McMahon can be heard laughing at Carson's joke.

- When Ralph is talking, his voice is different to how it is in later episodes.
- When Homer enquires to Lisa that Marge would be better at getting her a new 4 1/2 reed, Lisa answers, "I called her she's not home," yet in the very next scene, Marge is seen present in the crowd reassuring Lisa that her father wouldn't fail her; this raises the question as to why Marge didn't simply take Lisa out to the store (the reason she was not home was obviously because she had departed to attend the talent show).
- In this episode, it is revealed that Apu was dating Princess Kashmir, showing how much of a bachelor he was in the early seasons.
- In a brief montage when Homer spends time with Lisa, he blow-dries Lisa, and the animation looks very similar to "Bart the General" when he blow-dries Bart in a scene compared to this episode.

- In "Old Money", Lisa mentioned if she got a pony she would name it Princess.
- Moe's Tavern also distracts Homer from running an errand for a family member in the comic story Maggie's Crib #25.
