- The title of the episode is a reference to the play The Boys in the Band.
- The episode is a parody of the 2014 film Whiplash. J. K. Simmons voices Victor Kleskow, a parody of his character from the movie, Terence Fletcher.
- The kids discordantly play Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik.
- When Dewey Largo prepares for the concert, the theme from the film Patton by Jerry Goldsmith plays.
- Looney Tunes: Mr. Largo has the band hold a note for a long time, causing an overweight trumpet player's formal wear to unravel. Bugs Bunny does the same thing to Giovanni Jones in the 1949 cartoon short Long-Haired Hare.
- At the concert, the kids play Lieutenant Kijé by Sergei Prokofiev.
- Bart sings "Sucks To Be You" to the tune of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.
- Homer mentions Breaking Bad as a way to make money, saying he can sell the complete series' boxset, then takes out a hat, glasses and beard, to appear like Walter White. A parody of the Breaking Bad intro then plays, with the words [C]ommercial [B]reak, chemical symbols for Carbon and Boron respectively.
- The Knight Rider theme is played by the kids at Capital City.
- Victor asks Lisa to play Al Jarreau's Moonlighting theme.
- Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is played when Homer goes to his night shift.

- The Shining - During the scene where Homer starts hallucinating and dancing with a radiation suit, thinking that he's in a ballroom:
- The music playing is Midnight, the Stars and You by Harry M. Woods, Jimmy Campbell and Reg Connelly, which is heard during the ballroom scene and closing scene of the 1980 film.
- Lloyd the bartender tells Homer that his family is becoming a problem and he needs to kill them, the same as Lloyd with Jack Torrance.
- After Homer returns to reality, a crazed-looking man with an axe walks by saying, "I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm just gonna bash your brains in." In the film, Jack says the same thing to Wendy during the staircase scene.
- Parodies of Last Supper, Mona Lisa and Vitruvian Man are made by Maggie with the Sketch 'n' Etch.
